Default battery chg/ act. gear cracking question

Ok I know it seemed to happen to me but.. It seems as though the general feeling here is that by disconnecting the battery it causes the gear in the heat acuator to crack, is there a way to prevent this ? I tried shutting my heater off before removing battery cables and when I reinstalled the cables the heater turned on ??? Should we shut the heater off and disable it from coming on some how ( Fuse ) until the new battery is in then reconnect ?? Seems as though there is a conection but what to do to stop the problem ?? Why does it behave any different than shutting on and off the heat control ??
