Default Possible Alternator?

I have a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville. For some reason, while driving, my battery gauge will drop from 12 volts down to like 8 or 9. The lights dim and the air conditioner kicks down to half speed. If I wait about 3 minutes, the voltage goes back to 12 volts and everything seems to work fine. At first I thought it was the altenator, but from what I understand, the altenator will go out and that'* the end of story. This seems to go out and then fix itself. Any suggestions?

Check your belt and the connections of the plug and cable.

Once you finsih that up, cruise to autozone or Advance and have them test the battery and alternator in the car. That'll be a good indicator if either is bad.
