Help on Buying a 93 SSEi
Hey guys,
I have a Buick regal which is kicking my butt in maintenance and am looking for a beater if you will. Something decently quick, RELIABLE, and economic as far as gas. Now let me define those terms...
Decently quick would be anything in the 15 sec range.
Reliable means I can fix it myself. I consider myself to be a pretty good shade tree as I pretty much built my entire car but it is giving me a few problems that I need to dig back into the engine for.
Economic means that I don't have to put 40 bucks a week in the tank like I sometimes do now.
I always liked the bonnevilles and saw a 93 for 3500 yesterday. I am trying to figure out what the common problems are, how difficult it is to work on, etc. I taken almost my entire car apart (at one time or another) and put it back together. I have also changed the head gasket on an Acura legend I had. Just wondering how this car rates as far as ease of repair.
Thanks.

There is a 92 SSEi for sale in the For Sale section of the forum....I know she has been trying to unload her car for a while now. I think she wants $1700 for it.

It wouldn't take much to get that car to 15 secs

That sounds even better except that she is in Michigan and I am in Wash DC. I guess I need to put that in my profile.
Anyway, the car has aftermarket wheels on it and the calipers and drum have been painted red which means that someone has possibly been doing some hi po work to it. It has a new paint job but was pretty crappy in that there is over spray on all but the windshield, it is flaking off in some areas where I guess the old paint had started to flake and they just painted over it, and the is a spot on the lower rocker where they missed all together. I looked under it and everything looked sound. I haven't seen the interior or engine yet as the owner wasn't there but I am honestly going to offer the guy 2500 and see if he bites.
I really am concerned about common problems. What stuff regularly needs an eye kept on it if any. I browsed the board and pretty much everyone seems happy.
As far as performance, if it is close to 15 sec, that is good enough. My daily driver right now is a low 12 (hopefully high eleven when I am done) race/street car. I tried everything possible to keep it streetable and for the most part it is except that driving everyday means it gets beat up more then I want it to. Already had an attempted theft and I just got it all together about 6 months ago.
