I have a 96 SSEi, 210,000 kms (110,000 miles est). Anyway, I love my car. Spotless. You could eat off the engine. Back in the Fall, a belt fell off, I tried to drive to a service station and I unfortunately over heated my engine pretty bad. Expensive lesson learned! This started a knocking noise, took it in to get fixed and they told me I had to have the head gasket replaced and that the heads were warped. So they torn the top of my engine off and rebuilt it. $2000 Cdn. Ouch. 3 months later, started to hear another knocking type noise from the engine. Two days later, frayed the belt and stalled the engine. They tell me it was probably one of my connecting rods. When it overheated in the Fall, possibly made some of the parts brittle. Who knows.
Anyway now for the positive part, I have been without my car for 8 weeks, but I am now days away from getting it back. We managed to find a '97 engine with 115,000 kms on it, so we are switching it out completely. While we are at it, my tranny was starting to slip, so we picked up one of those as well, a new rebuild from GM.
So now that you have the background, my question is, what parts of my old engine should I keep for either replacement parts or for possible sale. I am thinking super charger, injectors, etc. But would really like to hear the reccomendations and feedback from the other experienced Bonnie owners on this site.

Ok. This is the common response from shop that knows not what an overheat on a 3800 can do. Just guessing here, but, your lifters were probably the ONLY thing that were bad. They go first...designed that way. The head gasket/warped head thing is a great way to make money but rarely ever the problem in our cars. If the belt frayed and a knocking was heard, they water pump probably went. The connecting rods would have NO WAY of doing this to your belt. They are the part that connects the crankshaft and the pistons. If you threw one of these, you'd know. There would most likely be a hole in the side of your block. Get you car out of that shop NOW!!!!!!!!!! They are beefing you for everything they can get.

This is actually the second shop that I took my car to. It was reccomended by friends. The guy at the shop actually said some of the same things you have suggested. No way is your engine gone, these engines are bullet proof, more than likely it could be the crank pulley, he had seen it in the past. After he had a chance to inspect the car, he said it was toast. Not exactly sure what is wrong inside without taking it apart, but hope to find out more when the enigine comes out tomorrow.

Did you get the wiring harness and PCM for the 97 motor that is going in?
