GM SRTA 4T60E Transmission with TCC Issues
Hi guys, a newbie here. Let me lead with a compliment, this is the best car forum on the web. My GM SRTA 4T60E tranny has 10 months and 10K miles on it and it shifts 1-2-3-4 perfectly, and when cold the TCC is faultless. But when hot (20 miles on the highway), the TCC unlocks and relocks repeatedly. After a few miles of this, the clutch begins to slip rather than lock. The dealer I have taken my car to has replaced the TCC solenoids, torque converter, and tranny electrical plug. None of these fixed the problem. This dealer has demonstrated little competence in solving this problem. I'm hoping that this vast membership can recommend a GM dealership in the Minneapolis St Paul area that has demonstrated the ability to fix this tranny. Thanks for the help and keep the good information flowing.

What was the reason for the trans to be replaced? When this trans was replaced did they make sure to flush the internal trans cooler( on the passenger side of the radiator ) before they installed the new trans? Its very important that they make sure that the failure of the old trans did not leave debris in the tranny cooler, if it did its possible that the trans could have a lack of cooling capeability and could be overheating which could cause yet another failure...
we reccoment that if there is a failure that has left the pan full of material and or metal bits that the internal cooler be bypassed and an AUX cooler installed for the trans or you could be buying a new trans before long.... I would take it back to the dealership and make sure they figure out the issue before you have to replace that trans out of your pocket...
Good Luck and let us know what happens..

The original tranny failed dramatically (all slip, no go) at 100K miles. A 4T60E SRTA was installed, but the work order didn't mention flushing the cooler and I was too ignorant to ask. It began having TCC unlock/lock/slip issues at 10K miles and was replaced under warranty, again with no paperwork about a flush. This tranny is currently installed and having the same issues. I installed a medium sized auxilliary cooler (10x10x3/4) and a fan switch that turns the low fans on at 175 degrees. It never runs too warm to touch, about 125 degrees. After the second transmission, I installed an auxilliary tranny filter out of the same concern for system debris. I checked the cooler line flow and meaured 2 GPM at an idle warm. I can find nothing in the PCM or vacuum control that can cause these problems. I think GM is getting sloppy and not rebuilding the valve bodies properly. Does a Sonnax Sure Cure Kit sound like a proper fix?

I am sorry that the issues is still there... A proper Valve body kit may be the answer... But its hard to say where the issues may be...
Also have yo had any codes for Trans slip? say an 1870 transmission component slipping?
My 95 with the 4T60-E is close to 150K and still does a good job, we changed the fluid 1 week before my trip and the pan was clean, I had the help of another member and he was supprised to see how clean it was, and the fluid was still cherry red...
Gennerally the 4T60-E is a good trans, and the SRTA units are pretty good...
Lash has the original trans on his 97 Bonneville and it at well over 160k and his trans is still strong... So i don't know what to really tell you...
Short of anything I would almost reccomend a low milage 1997 4T60-E as a replacement if worse comes to worse...
Is this trans still under warranty? You may have gotten a not so good reman.. Really wish i could be more help here

I saw the dreaded P1870 code on the first 2 transmissions, but nothing on the latest one yet. The slippage has to be very bad to set a P1870, and I'm not there yet, but history shows it is coming. I still have 15 months warranty left but I want to find the problem outside the transmission, i.e. in the car, or have ithe tranny fixed while it is still in warranty. Since this tranny is out of production, I think the dealers are losing their technical competence on this unit. That'* why I am looking to this forum for help to find a dealer with an experienced transmission man who stills know how to diagnose and fix this problem. It is my experience that dealerships are populated with parts changers, not mechanics.

So do you have all foward gears? In the morning when you start the car will it go right into gear? Also does reverse go into gear right away?
Are the shifts on the money or off by any degree? Do you slip more in one gear than another?
Something is wrong here, what it is tho is still a mystery... Finding someone that can truely rebuild or work on the GM FWD Hydramatics is a rare thing...

All 4 forward and reverse work perfectly, only the TCC lockup is not. And the TCC works fine until the tranny gets up to operating temperature. This is part of what makes the diagnosis difficult. A quick spin around the block doesn't show the problem.

Don, did you already forget about this service bulletin???

Murphy - I also have a '97, and I have been dealing with the exact same issue for the last 2 years. I'm just too cheap to follow the service bulletin and have the part replaced. The above link should answer all your questions. If not, keep coming back and we'll try to get this solved .

Thats a good one, and it would be strange to see a SRTA trans that did not already have that update... Unless the trans sat for many years
