Do you guys prefer to use the manufactured rubber gaskets or get the tubed silicon gasket maker when you're replacing a gasket?

I've replaced my oil pan gasket twice with rubber ones and it appears to still be leaking. Does the silicon fill the imperfections that much better? I think I may have over torqued with this last gasket, and I think the first was defective.

Also, is there gasket for oil filters or just the one on the filter itself? It looks like I had some oil sneaking through there also.

sometimes the regular gaskets are better because with the silicones you are supposed to wait a day for it to dry, but you have to be really careful about toque values the pan is probably bent now. so you may have to do the silicone now to take up the warpage.

Replace your oil pan gasket with the proper gasket. If it leaked then you likely did something incorrect. Everything needs to be clean, wipe it all down good. Put all bolts in and hand tighten. Then half torque, then full torque. Be sure to cross torque, in other words, move back and forth across the pan so your not just going around the pan.

Do I need to replace the pan if I did over torque? What is the specification for the torque on the pan bolts?

Dan, that'* what I did last time. The gasket is compressed and squeezing out the side some where it appears to be leaking. it'* possible the oil is coming from above and I'm chasing a ghost. My oil is pretty low though. Barely on the dipstick. I added some for the week but doing a full change next weekend.

I got a warranty replacement from autozone, gotta love it. I'll install that with the correct torque this weekend. My engine bay is a mess of fluids. My engine bay is a mess of fluids. A lot of leaks when I bought her. Makes finding leaks still around a heck of a lot harder though. I haven't had much luck with degreasers. Is it worth the money to have it steam cleaned?

i use simple green and a hose, but you have to work the gunk out out with a harder bristle brush like a wheel brush

Yeah.. I just moved into an apartment so I can't really use a hose / pressure washer which bites. Made sure to still have garage though.
