PCV Valve O-ring (*)
Regarding a 1996 Bonneville 3.8 SE 96,000 miles
Can anyone confirm for me number and where the O-ring (*) for the PCV valve go.
I am assuming that one o-ring goes on to the body of the PCV below the collar of the valve and that a larger o-ring goes onto the cap that locks down on top...Is thare a 3rd o-ring involved? Reason I ask is I just put in the Dorman UIF kit and it refered to 2 o-rings on to the PCV and the only thing I could think of is one below the collar and one is directly on top of the collar (the collar being the wider surface that the spring comes in contact with) but that seems kind of goofy. I'm thinking the 2 they were refering to were the big one on the cover and the small one that goes below the collar.
I just got this car used and I love it... but I'm like a babe in woods on some of this stuff...and I'm not sure what if anything the previous owner did or didn't do to it.
Thanks
Spit

On my '95, there is a small O-ring on the bottom end of the PCV valve that seals it into the passage to the LIM. On top of the valve, the only seal is the big O-ring on the cap, as you described.

Bill, mine is the same. I talked to a mechanic at a dealership who confirmed that it'* just 2 o-rings. The Dorman UIM kit instructions confused me...and when I kept getting a 171 code I was looking for a vaccum leak and I thought that the PCV could still be the problem...
Turns out that I failed to tighten the EGR tube at the EGR...I did tighten it at the manifold but not at the EGR itself. I loosened it at the valve to assisit in rermoving it from the manifold and I only finger tigthened it...After reviewing a bunch of posts on this site...I got the idea to check the EGR took one look and I could see an air gap...and it came back to be clear as glass that I deliberately held off tightening it at the EGR until I had it well seated and tighten a the manifold...and then I flat out forgot to tighen it.

Glad you found your problem, Spit, but still glad you posted your question, as this comes up pretty regularly. An often missed P0171 fix is the extra O-ring in the PCV valve. Another re-occuring problem is a failure to notice the old PCV O-ring left in the cavity.
Has your P0171 gone away now?
