whats the difference between a vin#l or vin #n 3800?
i have a 92 bonneville se with a vin L engine and a 93 lesabre with a vin#N
i need to know if i can interchange them the buick is wrecked and the pontiac threw a rod.

Hi Terry - welcome to the club!
Are you sure about that N Vin code? Was that in the eighth character position of the VIN? I don't know all of the information about the 3800, but I would think both of those engines are Series I, L27s, if they are not supercharged. Can you check the RPO codes on the sticker on top of the spare tire for both cars? Among other codes, I'm guessing you will find an L27 somewhere for both cars. I have never heard of a 3800 with a Vin N or RPO N. (But that doesn't mean there isn't one!)
Jr's3800 can probably tell you for sure, and whether the PCM will need to be switched. There may be an EGR issue with the swap, I think some '92s were EGR-less.

from what ive read in other posts the 92 is egrless with the tan intake and the 93 has the black plastic
the 92 also has full guages and the 93 is just idiot lights

There are a few things we need to get straight here...
There is a Vin N engine it is also known as the 3300 V6, Yes that would be the little brother to the 3800... The 3300 was used in a lot of A bodies and some N bodies through 1993...
But the Vin N 3300 was never used in the 87-99 bonneville...
If you have a Le Sarbe that is wrecked then you need to look closer at the vin number... For the 8th didget of the Vin you should have an " L " The 10th didget will tell us the model year..

LeSabre'* were NEVER supercharged, and I'm not aware of the 3300 being used on any H bodies, either.
If you get that engine, forget about the trans unless you get the PCM, too. It has a 2.84 ratio. You have a 3.06.

i was wrong about the vin i wasn't reading the 8th digit they are both L code so i start the swap this week as soon as i find the key to the pontiac
the wrecked buick runs and drives but it is really ugly with broken windshield and cracked fenders

Going to throw more into the fire here...
The Vin N 3300 is a rendition of the 3800... But there are diffrences...
The 3300 is an MFI set up, as in if fires the injectors in pairs as opposed to 1 at a time... That means that the crank pulley only has 3 tabs for the crank sensor... Very diffrent from a 3800... The 3300 also has no balance shaft... The bore and stroke are diffrent as well.. This engine was used from 1989-1993 in many GM N and A body applications.. This engine much like the 90-92 Vin L 3800 was also EGR'less for the 5 years it was produced. Little 3300 was good for 160 Hp and 200Ft Lbs of torque..
The 3800 C, L and K... Eventhough these are stated as MFI they are actually SFI powerplants... The fire the injectors individually in sequence... The crank pulley will have a dual patten tangs on the back for the dual crank sensor, it will be a 3x and 18x pulse...
These engines have always used sequential fuel injection, even the old 3.8 87-88 if memory serves also used SFI... Eventhough these engines were simmilar they worked in a very diffrent manner..
