whats the difference between a vin#l or vin #n 3800?

Default whats the difference between a vin#l or vin #n 3800?

i have a 92 bonneville se with a vin L engine and a 93 lesabre with a vin#N
i need to know if i can interchange them the buick is wrecked and the pontiac threw a rod.

Hi Terry - welcome to the club!

Are you sure about that N Vin code? Was that in the eighth character position of the VIN? I don't know all of the information about the 3800, but I would think both of those engines are Series I, L27s, if they are not supercharged. Can you check the RPO codes on the sticker on top of the spare tire for both cars? Among other codes, I'm guessing you will find an L27 somewhere for both cars. I have never heard of a 3800 with a Vin N or RPO N. (But that doesn't mean there isn't one!)

Jr's3800 can probably tell you for sure, and whether the PCM will need to be switched. There may be an EGR issue with the swap, I think some '92s were EGR-less.

from what ive read in other posts the 92 is egrless with the tan intake and the 93 has the black plastic
the 92 also has full guages and the 93 is just idiot lights

terry you are correct. the 92 ERGless engines have a aluminul upper intake, in late 92 towards the end of the year, GM switched to the 3800 with the EGR and the black plastic upper intake.

I also have never herd of a VIN N engine

LeSabre'* were NEVER supercharged, and I'm not aware of the 3300 being used on any H bodies, either.

If you get that engine, forget about the trans unless you get the PCM, too. It has a 2.84 ratio. You have a 3.06.

i was wrong about the vin i wasn't reading the 8th digit they are both L code so i start the swap this week as soon as i find the key to the pontiac
the wrecked buick runs and drives but it is really ugly with broken windshield and cracked fenders

would it be best to use the plastic egr manifold or the metal egrless?
