Default Engine codes???

How do I read the engine codes for my Bonneville SSE 1997? This car has everything under the sun on it including the heads up display. Is there a list of codes posted on this site. I need some help getting started. Thanks. I just had to pay to find out I have a lose plug wire. That is not good.

I appreciate your help.

Go to your local auto parts store (Advanced, NAPA, Autozone, etc). Most will scan it for free.

That is simply amazing that they will scan them for free in the US. That'* a bid saving'*. Here they charge around $50.00 to $100.00 depending on whether it'* engine or ABS. I suppose you still probably need to go to the dealer for ABS, but some shops should be able to read them also.

And I think that'* an amazing idea. My neighbour just told me that the dealer charged him $75.00 to read the code on his 2003 Buick Century only to tell him that his gas cap was loose. That was a waste of money, but I know.........it needed to be done.

You can buy a generic OBD2 code reader for that price or less.

Autozone...maybe Napa.

Advance stopped scanning. They were starting to have liability issues.

The basics are you have them scan your car. It says X is pushing the codeg, you buy X from them and replace. A few days later the code returns because X wasn't the problem.

Mechanics hate the parts stores scanning for two reasons. First..it'* revenue, secondly.. people then think they know what their problem is.. and usually further diagnostics tell them the problem is related...but not the part the scanner says.

Take code P0171 for example. Lean Bank One, any parts store will sell you an O2. Most likely..it'* not an O2.

I hear ya Bill, it would be nice to have someone scan it for free anyway and then it'* buyer beware sort of speak.
