I can only guess that it was 2+ months of driving on a busted radiator. Extra heat on an already ancient gasket (146k).
Just for posterity i pulled the dipstick and sure enough - good'n frothy!
Dammit i really hate my car right now....

Not too hard a job for a beginner. I did that before I even ever changed the oil on my car which was the first time I ever did anything important to a car. Just remember EVERYTHING you disconnect and make sure its ALL connected before you start her up. The fuel lines are probably thee most important thing to remember. I didnt fully seat mine in when I first started her up and I had fuel spraying all over the engine. Good luck!

Are we saying that the oil was milky?
And you were driving around with a busted radiator? How badly busted?
Does the car still run good?
A warning for everyone here...
The Coolant Temp Sensor, measures just that... The temperature of the coolant in the block... If there is no coolant around the sensor then the sensor will have a hard time determining the actuall temp of the engine.... I have seen various engines crack heads and blow head gaskets for radiator issues...
On the Lower intake mainfold gaskets, they aren't that hard to do, but it will require some patience... Give yourself a day to take it all apart and get everything clean, and another day( once you feel refreshed after some good sleep( sharp mind ) and then put it all back together... Gaskets should run about $25...
Post some pics for us when you get to it... If there is any other info you need just ask..

radiator had a 1 inch crack at the leading edge in the center of the top row. it caused coolant to evaporate until the system was half-full (judging by what drained out during the swap). the car ran with the temp needle exactly at the half-way point on the highway, a little higher sitting still. I know it was running very hot near the end.
the dipstick had bubbles on it, but it wasn't "milkshake" consistency like a headgasket failure kind of leak.
the car is going to sit until this weekend when I'll tear the engine down and inspect for damage. surprisingly, the engine still runs perfectly but there'* no way it'* getting driven until I can address this.

Eh about........................... a month? lol no the work took a week but I had some other problems so when I finally got my car working perfect again it was about a month after the work started. If you have a nice good week to throw away then you'll easily get it done in a few days for a beginner as long as you know what you are doing and have a good set of tools.
