Default Overdrive Problems!!

So ya this was the first time i have driven my car the 700 mile trip to AZ. and it did fine. but the day before I left to come back to UT I noticed my car was not shifting into overdrive at all. so I stoped and I checked the Transmission Fluid and it was about 2 bottles low lol. so i filled it and it stoped. (for a while) the whole trip home the only way I would have overdrive is if I turned the car off and back on, and then it would only stay on until I had to pass and it would shift into 3rd to pass and would just stay in third. any ideas on what it could be. is my transmission shot? my car just barly turned over 103,000 miles. so ya any ideas???

You may have damaged your trans running it that low, and have certainly cooked your fluid. What does the trans fluid look and smell like after about a half hour of driving?

Let us know.

I would suggest trying a flush and filter on the transmission by a shop for starters. It'll cost around $100 and be the best way for you to further evalute the life of the transmission.

At this point the fluid was probably cooked and needs to be flushed. New fluid and filter could possibly restore some if not all workability depending on how badly the fluid got cooked.

Failure to stay in overdrive with this trans can be caused by a bore and piston in the pump body that tends to leak. That specific problem is permanently fixed by changing the valve body or by reboring and replacing the piston. Sonnax (?) makes a kit specifically for this. Anyway, the leakage around the piston gets worse as the temperature of the transmission increases. My transmission was dropping out of overdrive whenever it got hot in the summer. I have had good results by installing a transmission cooler. The leakage stays low at cooler trans temperatures and it stays in overdrive on all but the very hottest days. (I should have sprung for the $60 cooler instead of the $40 one.) Still, I am very happy with it. It also makes the engine run cooler as it reduces the heat load on the radiator. Even if this is not the specific cause of your problem, it won't hurt to install one. Heat is the number 1 killer of transmissions. Anything you can do to make them run cooler is gonna help them to last longer.
