Default anyone'* ride sound like a dentist drill? and more..

so, i had my '98 se in a couple weeks ago for some (extended) warranty work. my dealer replaced the upper plenum (for the second time), and replaced the rear main oil seal. when i got it back, i noticed that it sounds like a dentist drill only under the following conditions: when the car is in gear and when the car is given a little bit of a push. for example, i can take off from a stop light, give it a little gas (not to the floor), have it shift into second and i will hear a noise sounding like a dentist drill. a couple seconds before it shifts into third, it will quit, then when it'* in third gear it will start again. only does this in a specified rpm range, say 2000-3300. if i'm using cruise, i can accelerate more and i will hear the noise again for a couple seconds, until it stabalizes at the cruises speed again. i cannot duplicate this problem when the car is in park. it also does not do it if i baby it. any ideas?

also...my dealer tells me my steering rack needs to be replaced. very nice, since this isn't covered under my extended warranty. the p/* pump will whine when you turn it from left to right. it'* always done that, and my car has magnasteer. p/* resevoir level is perfectly fine. the problem lies when the car is at idle, and you turn the wheel. there'* a slight shudder if at idle, or say turning a corner without my foot on the gas. any ideas what this may be?

you guys have always been such a great resource, and thanks to all of you for your advice and willingness. any replies would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Hmm, could be a few things that cause the howl. When was the last time the tranny was serviced?
Set the e brake and put the car in gear, hold the brake and slowly rev the car to 1400rpm holding the car back. Does it make this whine sound? or only when the car is rolling?

thanks for the replies so far. the only thing that really gets me is that it started doing it the same day (even when i picked the car up) from the dealer. i'm not sure if this is pure coincidence, or if it'* something that got foobarred there. it also does it at all speeds, not only slow speeds. i'll try to run a couple more tests and see what i find out. any more info?

That could be simple belt slip if it'* only at idle. Try a new belt or some belt dressing. (not salad dressing).

Couldnt the whine be from bearings in the alternator too Will? Mine did make a whine sound until I replaced my alternator.
