Default Current UIM/LIM gasket kits?

Yeah it'* that happy time again. Oil'* getting a little chocolatey, sweet smell of sugar in the exhaust, and the antifreeze is starting to do the David Copperfield bit in the '95 SE N/A.

It'* been 5 yrs since i did a set, and i haven't been paying attention to what the fav kits/parts are.

Last time i remember, the recommended LIMs were the aluminum ones only available at the dealers. (if somebody knows the parts #, off the top of the head, I'd appreciate that.) I'll break the coolant elbow, so one of those, too.

For the plenum, UIMs, and pipe, I think Dorman and APN had developed full kits with additional smart goodies like injector O-rings.

So, what are the current recommended parts, and can you direct me to the best (price) place to get them.

Thanks for the help.

charlie

Chances are it'* the UIM leaking, not the LIM. Check inside the throttle body for coolant.

I agree with Dan.

Rockauto has the Dorman 615180G kit for $30. And if you look in the General chat area, you may find a current coupon code for them.

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys.

Well yes, I agree it'* probably the upper. But i have a couple more questions, if you have the time..

Mike... with the Dorman kit, are you suggesting that i replace the upper and stove pipe, and then re-use the OEM plenum? (given that it isn't too warped) In the past that wasn't a good idea, that'* why eveytbody went to Fel-Pro (anything but the OEM). Dorman still maintains their incompatibility with the OEM., but they might just be just trying to up their plenum (615180) sales. Let me know if that is what you are saying.

Dan... With 200K mi on the car, and an upper failure, you wouldn't pull the manifold and replace the lowers, too? My thoughts are that they are way past fried by now. If they are holding, it'* a matter of luck, not engineering prowess. Isn't that why GM came up with the short-lived ones with the build-up around the port openings, then the metal ones?

Thanks

charlie

I was under the impression that you had done the lowers, if so, how many miles on the job? If your still running stock lowers, ya, change them out with aluminum gaskets.

Oh, I see. No, it was the '96 last time.

BTW, after our last board conversation, I setup the sensor wire for the alternator (on the SSEi). It gave me avg .6v more while driving. BillB was suggesting connecting it to the ICM circuit instead of the post for the charging circuit, by the relays. I tried it both of your ways. His way got much more mercurial readings and your way was steadier.

I did it to the post as you recommended. Both ways dipped down when a sustained maximum draw was introduced, but connecting to the post was definitely less of a drop. And that'* with equal output from the engine in both recordings. FWIW.

OK. I still need some help. do I have this right?

RockAuto

615180G kit - Dorman gasket with O-rings for mountings. Is that a stove pipe i see in the kit? $30

Since it'* telling me I can't use an OEM plenum..

615180 - Dorman intake $90

For the lowers, I should get the aluminum ones at a dealer. They are about $50+ for the pair?

Don't mean to be a pest, but Rock only has one kit left and I want to grab it.

Thanks.

For the lowers check at intense racing or ZZ performance. Might have a better price on the aluminum gaskets. Sorry I can't help with the uppers.
