Most economical fix for my tranny?
So the tranny in my 1994 SE doesn't like to shift into reverse at all(prolly takes me about 2 mins to get it to go into gear), and once it gets there it makes a horrible grinding noise. Also of lately it doen'ts like going into drive that much but once it gets into drive it shifts smoothly and runs great.
So i have come up with 2 options: 1) Bring it to cottman transmission and have then fix it(prolly very expensive) Option 2) Buy a tranny at the local junkyard for $250 and bring it to a small garage around town and have them throw it in. To me option 2 sounds to be the cheapest solution. Anyone have any idea what a tranny swap might cost?
I am going to sell the car once this is fixed, so i really dont care about how reliable the tranny has to be for years to come. I know that sounds shady but thats how i see it right now.
So i look to you guys for my best option and ideas. Thanks for any help!

It depends on how long you want to keep the car. If you plan on running it into the ground for the next 10 years then get a new tranny. If you want another year or 2 out of it i'd say a guaranteed used tranny and installation by a private shop is an OK way to go. I don't know what the labor rates there are but it'll probably cost you 200-300 to have it put in. Make sure and find the lowest mileage tranny you can though.

Alec... please..please
You can probably get it swapped out for $300-500. they will need to pull both axles, drop the cradle and fight them in and out.

Option 2 sounds like a good option to me!!! If the car is over 10 years old, all the parts I get for my car come from the yard!!! It shouldn't cost you anymore than $250.00 for them to install the tranny in your car. I would definately go used due to the age of the vehicle and obviously your budget!

Well its a funny thing, about 11 hours after my first post i tried to back into my parking spot at work and she gave up :( Wouldn't go into an gear at ALL this time.
So I ended up getting outa work early, calling AAA, then calling this shop down the road from my work and the guy said the labor would be $275 and then with fluids about $300. So she got towed! I called up Granby auto salvage got a tranny for $250 and is being delivered to the garage tomorrow sometime. So hopefully she can be ready to run by the end of the week so i can throw a FOR SALE sign on her
Thanks for your help guys!

that is a decent deal since it is 8 hours of labor to remove and replace the other trans.

See i TOLD you 200-300 dollars. It all depends on the labor, that shop must be around $55 an hour like the shop i work at, of course a bigger shop will be closer to $75-$80/hr.
