Default Problem with A/C system.

I noticed that when i driving, the A/C on the floor (feet) never seems to shut off. I do not have an automatic temperature control. I have the SE with mostly base. I wonder if a vacuum seal is broken somewhere.

Does air come out of the dashboard vents?

No it does not. Only the floor vents. And I know this for sure, because when I turn the temp control. It adjusts with the ****. Even though the system is in off position

Look for a vacuum leak somewhere between the throttle body and the vacuum tank on the firewall. Turn the engine on and listen for a hissing sound. Your climate controls are probably not getting any vacuum.

I am assuming you can't get air out of the dashboard vents when it is set to them and the fan is on.

What he said. You have no control vacuum. Start under the hood; look for any disconnected vacuum lines. If a gorilla installed an aftermarket stereo, it'* possible that something in the dash got dislodged, too, but start with the areas where the vacuum lines are visible and possibly snagged, damaged or broken.

I believe that I have vacuum, but somewhere there must be a small leak.

I too have notice that air comes in from under the floor...I always thought this was normal. If it'* cold just adjust the temp. gauge.

I was told that this was normail too, but it does not seem like a normal thing for a car. Especially because it is in off, and I can adjust the temp control. The fact that it is on, means that I am losing a percentage of my HP.

Um, not really, no. If the _compressor_ is running, that could exert a really slight parasitic drag, but the car cuts it out under hard acceleration, plus you can always just leave the A/C switched off under those circumstances if you want. (If you have the C62 electronic A/C, just press the Econ manual button and get out of Auto mode.)

The vacuum system wouldn't affect the engine in normal operation, although if it was actually leaking big-time, that would be something else. (Some vacuum-operated parts such as certain EGR valves, like on the Buick/Olds 3.8L V6, are _designed_ to leak vacuum, so they won't operate at all unless they're on a steady vacuum draw.) Keep in mind also that when you want to turn off a vacuum-operated component, you actually have to do it by letting air _in_ somehow, so a _controlled_ leak in parts of the system is needed from time to time.

So What you are saying is that even thought you have the ac OFF......air is still comming out from the floor vents?

As far as no air comming out of the middle vents..the cause of that could be a vacum line loose near the brake booster...in the firewall....look for a small line that is not attached to anything.!
