Default 92' Boone transmission behavior normal?

My 92' Bonne has the 440-T4 transmission without lockup. When I let off the gas I might as well have put the car in neutral. It freewheels with absolutely no engine braking. Going downhill the car can pick up considerable speed. This make if hard to keep a constant speed (without braking) here in the hills (mountains) of East Tennessee.

Is this normal? The transmission seems to be in excellent shape other than this annoyance.

How about the 4T60E, with lockup. You should lock up the TC at 48mph under light throttle. Does it? Any check engine light? Have you pulled codes?

Isn't this normal though? My TC locks up all the time consistently at 49mph under most cases. I drive on a lot of hills every day and if let off the gas on a significant decline my car will pick up plenty of speed too. Thats why I use cruise control to save my brakes.

If this is the case and your having this issue going down hill its normal with the 4T60-E ... If this is happening while you are climbing hills then we have an issue
No, only downhill. I have a 440-T4 not a 4T60-E. So the TCC is supposed to disengage? Do I have a TCC? How can the cruise control help, can it stop the TCC from disengaging?

Correction. NO 92-95 Bonneville came with a 440-T4. All came with a 4T60-E in Non HD and HD form.

The owners manual clearly states that it has an AT 440-T4 (Overdrive) transmission. One thing, though it is a 1992 model it was made 7-91 according to the sticker on the drivers door.

How can I tell? The transmission has no ID plate or markings.

Drew, can you put your year and trim level in your signature? Thanks!

You have a 92. All were produced with the 4T60E. Your owner'* manual is using an old GM designation for the trans.

[quote Look on the Spare tire cover at the code list.... It should say M13 This is a 4T60-E... and yes the 91 models ended production early for the retool and then Began Production on the 92'*... I saw them being delievered to the dealerships in july of 91 [/quote]

I have no spare tire cover. It only has the pad over the tire, I assume there was a fiber board with a code list lable? Most likely it was gone long before I had the car.

There is an ID plate on the top radiator cross beam on the drivers side. I can tell it has the paint code, etc. Could it be there? Could it be buried in the VIN?

Thanks,

Drew
