How do you know the sending unit is fine? It is very common for the sending units to go bad on these cars. On my 97 the sender died at 40k miles and was stuck at full, had to be replaced and now its fine. On my friend'* 97 the sender also died and his gauge is stuck at full.

checke deverything like all data says to make sure the unit is fine and it is also if you shake the car when you have a volt meeter on it the ohms change. based on what the wire is from the unit to the gauges it is fine at the connector if all data has the right wire listed that is but seems like it looses connection once you plug the connectores to the ip but all other gauges work

Using a voltmeter is the best wat to test the sending unit but I would test the wire from inside the car. Say like in the trunk behind the rear seat or better yet, right at the cluster. Are you reading the resistance on the sending unit half of the connector?

I had to track down a fuel pump problem on my 90 and it turned out to be an intermittent connection inside the connector. I would also expect that you would have more than one gauge problem if the cluster was to blame.

Check your PMs in a minute too

husband checked with the meter at the sending unit and at the wires going to the trunk both seem to be fine even took the sending unit out to make sure nothing was junked up and make sure the sensor was movable and it is don't think it'* the instrument panel thee people i bought it from said it had been that way for a year before any other gauge starting going cluster had the normal problem cleaned all the connecotrs and it works fine now but still no fuel gauge even when the custer was off adn on it always read full no matter what

Well, I count 3 things that it could be:

sending unit
a break in the circuit from the tank to the cluster
a faulty gauge

Since your testing with the volt meter indicated that the sending unit is working properly (variable resistance between 0 and 90 ohms) we can cross that off the list. If it is the gauge, the entire cluster would have to be replaced. Before you incur the cost of a replacement cluster, I'd think that you would want to be sure that the same resistance readings he is getting at the tank are seen at the cluster connector. This will verify that the circuit is OK.

If the correct resistance is seen at the cluster connector, replace the cluster.

thats what he was trying to do but all data just shows ppl/white going to connector at cluster here lies the problem 2 connectors to the cluster and both have a ppl'white wire not sure which one connector it is to check the wire

That'* one thing I don't like about Alldata. Some of the information is either omitted or very difficult to find. Try to find a pinout diagram of the two connectors in the "Connector Views" section. Otherwise, another member with a 96 FSM will have to chime in. My 93 diagrams will just send you in the wrong direction.

well resistance is the same all the way through from the tank to the connector replaced sending unit also still pegs full replaced cluster because the rest of cluster finally went out everything works but the fuel gauge still reads full constantly any ideas
