what is the correct way to "bench-bleed" the master cylinder?
Just read the instructions that come with the new or rebuilt MC. It will come with plugs or special tubes. All you need is a vise to hold the MC, a rod of wood or round-end metal, and some brake fluid. Basically, you fill with fluid and either plug the outlets or tube the outlets back to the reservoir and pump the piston with the rod 'til there are no more bubbles. When you install the MC, you need to do it quickly enough that neither the front nor rear chamber of the reservoir completely drain. Directions may be different - just follow them and you'll be OK.
