Car chugs at 1500 rpms
I tried searching for a similar problem, but had no luck. I did find posts about a surging problem but my car chugs and misses. Hope I am not confusing the two. It seems that regardless of engine or air temperature, my car hesitates and chugs right around 1500rpms. If I am driving at a constant speed where the rpms level out less than 1500, then I try to accelerate the car chugs pretty severely and I have to let up on the accelerator the slap it to rev past 1500. Once I am past 1500 the cars runs fine! I replaced the fuel filter this past weekend and thought that fixed the problem, except it came back last night. I threw some fuel injector cleaner this morning so I can see on the drive home if that helps or not. I sure hope it'* not the tranny and only something a weekend mechanic like myself can attempt to repair. Thanks for help.

You are going to want to put in your year and trim level to help us out. Sounds like a tranny issue, however, it could stem from the ECM calling the wrong shots. Wait until someone who knows your gen a little better chimes in.

I get some chugging too ever since my tranny was rebuilt, its usually at like 1500-3000 rpm but only when cruising at those speeds. If Im gunning it then there is no chugging. Most likely a tranny problem for you too. Im hoping if I flush the tranny oil myself it will be somewhat smoother.

Mine chugs too 97 se...did the plugs,wires...this is a pretty low rpm for the motor to be pulling a load at...it'* geared for mileage...which is fantastic.

Well assumin his problem is the same as mine, it doesnt feel like a shudder and then its gone. Say Im cruising at 2500 rpms on the freeway, there will be a tugging feeling over and over and you can see the rpm stick going along with the tug.

Thanks for all the replies. Here are some answers. As far as the plugs and wires, they've never been replaced! I've been surfing around this site and that seems to be a common thread in a lot of posts dealing with rough running. I'll try that this weekend. Any suggestions on brand/type of plugs and wires would be appreciated. Now the speed at where the chugging starts is a little harder to pinpoint. It seems to happen after I reach a steady speed - either aroung 40mph or even 70mph- the thing is it'* after I reach that speed and the tach drops down to cruising rpm. It'* when I try to accelerate from this cruising rpm that is starts to chug. I also noticed that if I am cruising and start to go up an incline in the road where I need to accelerate to keep my speed up is when it chugs also. Hope my ranting has made more sense of my problem. Would a tune-up be a wise thing to do? The car has 89K miles. Thanks again for all the help
