Default Seal, Crankshaft Front Cover Oil - 92 SSEi

I have an oil leak and it appears to be coming from the crankshaft pulley. Is it possible to replace the oil seal there without pulling the engine to do it?

Are there any special tools necessary?

Any tricks or tips for doing it in the car?

I have already removed the Torque Axis Engine Mount because I am in the process of replacing the water pump; it fell apart on me yesterday.

Also, should I replace the crank and cam position sensors while I'm in there.
The car has 302,000 miles on it?

Thanks, JB

I have heard that the crank seal can be done in the car, however have no experience with doing one that way. I would certainly try.

Cam and crank sensors can fail today or in 100 years, I wouldn't replace then unless you saw an issue.

Jb,
Okay I see your point/post! JB do not mean to hurt your feelings but I know people who have sold their cars in order to avoid messing with that nightmare. Changing the crank seal with the block still in the engine bay is baaaaaddd! BillBoost37 is that possible and safe and standard operating procedure? I mean how do you get in there to the seal itself?

UPDATE -

Okay, here'* the deal. I can now answer my own question, with some assistance from BIG POPPA and the maintenance manual. The front oil seal can be replaced rather easily.

For future reference and without getting to detailed:

1. Remove right front tire and plastic wheel well shroud
2. Remove serpentine belts
3. Using puller, remove harmonic balancer
4. I used a painters' tool and hammer to get underneath and pry up the edge
of the oil seal lip
5. Using vice-grips, pull out seal.
6. Install new oil seal and reassemble. ( I reshaped the old seal after pulling it out
and inverted it to be used for banging the new seal in place.

It'* possible one may also have to remove some pulleys or the torque-axis mount
but that is all minor stuff.

The main thing is that it can be done in one'* driveway without extreme difficulty.
