Default Fuel Tank Replacement

So we just found out today that our fuel tank in the '98 is finished.

Which tanks from other years/models are compatible with the '98 SSEi? Would say a '95 SE tank fit?

And how difficult an install job is something like this if you put the back end up on a stanard ramp? Are there any specialized tools necessary?

Thanks,

brad

all tanks 92-99 should be compatable....although i would stay from the 92-93 tanks, because of baffel problems

I think the baffle issue is only on 92 tanks.

I had to replace the pump on my 99 and learned a few tricks....

1.) Jack up the rear of the car and put it up on jack stands in front of the rear wheels.
2.) Use up as much of the gas in the tank as you can.
3.) Even if you have a helper, use a transmission jack to help lower the tank.
4.) Be prepared to replace the quick connect clips at the fuel pipes.

#3 was a life saver for me. It makes the job SOOOO much easier.

The tank part number is the same from 90 to 97 but there are several different sending units throughout that span. 98+ is a different part number but have no idea what the difference(*) are and if they are significant enough to prevent an older one from being used. Definately retain and install your original sending unit on the replacement tank.

Thanks for the info guys.

Turns out in addition to a tank, our sender is also cooked....

AND they told me to stop using the parking since it no longer releases fully.... Great...

I paid $330 for a new sender from the local AC Delco supply house. List on it is over $400. I think the pump was $125 or so. IMO, change the pump while you're in there for preventative maintenance. The pump will fail, it'* only a matter of time.

One thing that can make your life easier is consider having new straps on hand. If the bolts fight, simply cut the straps and replace.

I paid around $55.00 for the sender in Ebay; same part number and brand as the ones sold at the local parts store.
