Default 1994 Bonneville not shifting properly after bad alternator

Hello. A couple of days ago me and my wife were driving home and all of a sudden the volt gauge shot over to 18 vcd and the tranny acted like it was lugging and seemed to be stuck in the higher gears. If I got going fast enough I could manually drop into second gear but at a stop it would not go into first. Anyways, had faulty reg. in alternator. Replaced it and everything seemed fine for a day and then that night the CEL came on and the shifting problem came back. I attempted to read codes but that was a whole mess in itself. It seems in 1994-95, GM decided to put OBD2 16 pin connectors on OBD1 systems. OBD2 scanner does nothing and I tried jumping pins 4,5 together and still nothing. Does anyone know how to put this thing into diagnostic mode with the 16 pin newer style connector? I have looked everywhere on the net and it just doesnt seem that there is very much info on this. Any help you all could provide would be priceless.
I am suspecting that I may have a bad speed sensor but I would rather check the codes first before I do anything. Thanks......l8r

I have seen this referred to as OBD 1 1/2 but don't know how to scan or retrieve codes or what the best scan tool is for this situation. That is among the things I hope to learn from this site. This will serve as a bump to the top in hopes of us both learning.
If you end up finding out from some other source, will you post here please.
I will do the same.
Thanks.

Thanks for answering. I can appriciate your fustration. I had expected to plug my scanner in an get it fixed up but screw that.....lol. I took it to Autozone for them to scan it and they looked at me like I had 10 heads when I told them about the whole hybrid OBD1/2 thing. O well. As far as whats wrong with it and what I may just have to do as much as I hate doing it is to begin changing a few parts to see if that clears things up. IF the VSS or speed sensor went bad for some reason, would the tranny not shift properly and the cruise be diabled as well. I havent yet took it for another spin to check the cruise yet but it was just my theory anyways. I could get the codes read and it may just come back as transmission not shifting right which would be a no brainer at this point anyways. If I find anything out I will post on here for sure and if anyone else has anything else to add please.....add....l8r

After I posted here I did a search of this forum for the OBD thing and got lots of posts to read from that. I did learn a little but the post that looked like it would have the most/best info didn't exist anymore... go figure.
There were still lots more to read but I had to go deal with some stuff in real life.
Hope to get a chance to read more later.
If you hit search at the top of the page and enter OBD 1 1/2, you'll be ahead of me in no time.
I'll post if I find more.
By the way, I'm just talking about/searching for the OBD 1 1/2 code stuff, not your shifting problem.

I was just curious about the speed sensor which would throw a code 24 and I figured it wouldnt be that hard to just bust out the code reader and get it done. Boy was I in for a shock...lol. I will search that topic and see what I can find as well.....THanks again!

I also wanted to add that if there is anyone from here in the st pete/tampa area that has the capability to read the codes on this thing there would be pizza and ice cold ones involved.....
