yes you can do that.
I've done this a couple times. It would help you greatly to get a hold of a set of FSM'*(Factory service manuals)
They provide a step by step on doing this.
But here is my very very rough how to...I'd do better but too much beer right now:
but you will need a steering wheel puller..which can be rented at local parts store.
a clock spring release kit aka clock tool also can be rented.....
remove the airbag after disconnecting the battery and pulling the air bag fuse
pull the steering wheel
remove the air bag clock
unscrew the key cylinder screw
disconnect the wire going to the key cylinder
install in reverse

Try what Toddster recommended first, if that don't work we will have to see if we can write up a procedure. There you go Toddster, something for you do write up.
