Hello. I'm new here and I have two questions if anybody wants give it a hand. I have a 1997 sse anniversery edition and I’ve had one engine put in already, now this engine I have now is doing the same thing my old engine was doing, a bunch of white smoke coming out the exhaust and my antifrezze keeps going to low coolant indication. But before all of this, I would maybe be driving 30- 40 mph. and when I go to punch it for any reason or another I get one big tranny slip. And have to try again with success. Do these two things have anything to do with one another if anybody has had this problem before? Is a sensor gone bad for my slipping or what?very very fustrated...

Your symptoms are typical for an internal coolant leak caused by failed lower intake manifold gaskets or a failed upper intake manifold. Start by reading this Techinfo article: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...e=article&k=38

I agree. And that can be done DIY for under $200. As long as you don't roast your engine in the meantime.

thanks alot guys....i just got a used 40,000 mlie motor in my car and it would seem that the mechs that replaced my motor would have inspected it for any extra repairs that i might have needed...guess they wanted me to come back to juice me more but the motor is under a 4,000 mile warranty and i've only drivin roughly 1,500 miles after the install. being as though i have to take the car back now do you'll have anything you can tell me to tell the mechs on installing another used motor or repairs they might have to do so this will not happend again?

Get a UIM that specifically fixes the EGR passage, new aluminum framed LIM gaskets, and NO DEX-COOL.

If you buy another used motor, and don't do the preventive maintenance, it will happen again. It'* a WHEN, not an IF.

Along with doing the intake gaskets, check the vacuum line at the vacuum modulator on the transmission to see if there is any fluid in it. If there is, that could contribute to the shifting and smoking problem.

To get you heading in the right direction. The mechanics aren't hosing you. They don't fully disassemble a used motor to check it out and wouldn't have known.

The upper intake manifold is a pretty common problem with the Series 2 NA 3800'*. This motor may be repairable and they may change the upper intake manifold. They would need to change the manifold, not just the gasket. While in there, the lower intake gaskets should also be replaced as a precaution with aluminum frame gaskets.

Thanks, and bill buttermore, i read the whole link you sent me and it really helped but now my car is in the shop the mech is saying that he has 150psi on all of my cylinders and he doesnt see that it'* a failed UIM or LIM problem....he'* saying now it looks like it'* the ignition module because the car will not turn over. the night the car went bad i pulled it in front of my door and that was the last time i drove it before i got it towed to the shop. i mean after all of your responses and reading up on my original problem that does sound right to me, an" ignition module" but yet i see ll of this white smoke exhausting from the car and it'* running rough along with my low coolant light coming on...COME ON NOW

Find another mechanic ASAP. Check the oil for milkyness. Pull a couple spark plugs and inspect them for wetness. Smell the exhaust while cranking it. Smell sweet?

If there'* water in your oil, and the oil hasn't been drained, the longer it sits there, the more damage it does. We've lost motors to this in the past.
