If you didn't kill any of the bolts or threads in the tranny that hold the diff cover on you may get away with replacing the diff... But then the question would be what other if any damage was done when that happened and was the structural integrity of the trans case harmed or damaged in any manner?
I'd have to say if you can find another 2.97 diff, and you didn't harm the splines on the passenger side axle, than you may get away with the replacement.... But the ultimate question is weather or not the damage was severe enough to do more damage? The other question is, if id did work how long would it last?
Good Luck Joe..

Get a whole transmission. There is no way you could possibly justify the cost and effort of rebuilding a high mileage unit that destroyed itself like that. These transmissions are (obviously) weak enough as it is. If you take something that failed that catastophically and assume that all the other high mileage parts are A-OK, you're probably going to end up doing another trans again very soon. A used, low mileage trans shouldn't run you more than 300-400. www.car-part.com
