I started reading and said...I know this one!!!

But Randy'* quick typing beat me to it.

The whole situation can be seen under everything electrical a post the beginning of this week about Headlight switch meltdown.

Basics are with the headlight switch in place there should be no constant ding w/o key in car. You should get like 2 dings and see the open door on the DIC. W/o headlight switch something is missing and if you open drivers door you get a constant ding until you close the door.

I can not stress to you enough what I found. My headlight switch is melted beyond belief and the connector is melted. Randy and I are going to be picking up both at our local yard tomorrow. I have to cut off the old connector and solder/heat shrink the new on onto the car. My only symptom was that the parking lights didn't work.

You probably have a failing headlight switch. Hopefully it'* just an internal issue in the switch and nothing but a switch....but..I found FUBAR that was invisible until I took the switch off the connector. I plugged it in for a couple minutes of running and burned (BURNED) my finger when I touched the switch to see how warm it was.

I see the wire that was pulled back and correded that didnt make good contact and heated up the switch. But I will be very cautious when putting in the new one....and praying it'* just that simple. My case is most likely a single event..that you won't see.

Worth a look though....and probably change the switch to fix your problem.. Advance auto had them for $30 but had to use my *****..and something wasn't right. Hoping to find one in the yard tomorrow.

You certainly have an uncommon problem there. It might not be the headlamp switch but we know at least one vehicle that is having a similar problem and know what the cause is. It'* worth a look. Older Ford Taurus models had a cronic ignition problem which caused the same dinging. I've never seen the same problem in a GM but that would be a good place to look too.

My 93 manual shows a LT GRN wire in the steering column that when grounded, will cause the Multi Function Chime to ding when the door is opened. You can start by checking this wire with a volt meter to see if it is grounded. Perhaps it'* a faulty "key in the ignition" switch or maybe an aftermarket device like a remote starter is connected to it.

I'm not quite sure why in Bill'* case the MFC dings as his wiring is somewhat different than my 93. Someone with a 98 service manual would have to jump in with more info.

Get in the other door....Or go fast and make the dinging short. About the easiest fixes to me. Well Pat said tape the door plunger down...pretty easy there.

Bose makes a great pair of noise-cancelling headphones.... they're a little pricey, but maybe you can wear them when opening the car door to alleviate the situation.....

yah here it is just under the driver dash plastic deal on the radio side. you can find it easily.
i work on my car all the time and that thing drove me nuts. i always look at my gauges/heads up display, and look at my car when i leave it to make sure the lights arent on anyways. the pics came from my cardomain page 3. It doesnt effect anything else either cuz i had it disconnected for a couple years now. I tried doing it to my friend'* explorer and yah it definately was connected to the windows so they didnt work unless it was connected. but if you are installing something you can disconnect it then reconnect it when you are done if you want to keep your chime box.

the wonderful sound of silence.
