Before you pull the VCG'*, do a thorough cleaning of the engine first. Do it yourself with 2 or 3 applications of Gunk Foamy Engine-brite or have it professionally steamed.
Then watch for the leak. My bet is that it'* NOT VCG'*. (they're actually a very narrow seal that sits in a track on the VCG flange, just like the upper intake seal).
Your most likely place for a leak is between the top of the block and the lower intake. There'* a rubber seal (usually black from the factory) that runs through there, and the ends (where the lower intake and block meet in the corners) can leak. If this is where your leak is (not a pressure leak, it'* just splashing oil from the lifters/rods) you MAY be able to re-seal it from the outside using RTV if you get it really clean first.
If it is the Valve Cover Gaskets, that'* a piece of cake, and we can post some tips.

Sealant
I think I may have some of that. I forget what it'* called, but I used it on my truck'* new water pump. I seem to remember that it'* blue, and it went on the surface between the pump and the engine block.
Am I barking up the right tree?
