I was trying to change my rear struts tonight and I couldn't get the two bolts off the base of the strut.
I was able to get the nuts off but the bolts would not break free.
I tried a 2 foot long breaker bar and i tried to bang them through too.
They did not even budge.
Do i need an impact gun or is there some secret trick?

Might need an impact, but you may be able to break it loose without one. Lots of penetrating lube and a hammer are good starts. Hitting the bolt/nut can help sometimes, if you don't make it worse. I had to cut my rear anti sway bar endlinks because they were so bad.

I didn't try penetrating lube but i used a hammer to beat the crap out of it with the nut on the bolt and a socket on top of the nut.
I think the impact gun is where it'* at. I can borrow one off someone i know if i catch them early enough.

Are the front towers this hard? (they just look easier)

if the spring is still tensioning the knuckle you'll never get it off.

When I did my front struts I found that if the bolts don't turn, they can't be pounded out. I used a 3 foot breaker bar. I broke 2 regular sockets and finally got my hands on an impact socket. This worked well.

All good advice above too. Especially the penetrating oil. It is a must-have item in the toolbox.
