What is the skinny on this. When should it come on and when should it go off. Mine will stay on for about a min after I start. A mechanic once asked me, Hey has that light always worked like that, ( in a gruffy voice with greasy hands). That got all over the side of my car and made me angry cause I had just washed it!!!!

not sure for the 97 but i'm assuming it was the same as the 92....flashes with the rest of the lights at start up {or it stays on?} and goes off, flases when u open your door, and only should stay illuminated once u open the door and lock it, once u do that give it about 10secs and it should go off

The security light in my '99 has been on solid for at least six months. Cleaning the key and contacts in the ignition lock didn't work.

No codes, no problems yet. Kind of annoying, though.

System Check procedures -

To begin:
1. Put ignition switch in RUN position (engine NOT running)
2. Close front doors
3. Unbuckle seat belts
4. Set park brake off

"SECURITY" indicator should light for approximately five seconds.


if "Security" indicator remains on or does not operate properly:

Perform PASS-II Diagnostic System Check:
- Check for PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Attempt to start vehicle
- Note "Security System" indicator while cranking engine.

Did engine start?

No or Yes

I am assuming your engine starts so we will say "Yes"

Did the indicator turn on for approximately 5 seconds then turn off?

No or Yes

I am assuming "No"

Did the indicator stay "on" steady (vs. flashing, i assume)?

No or Yes

If no, then:
- check indicator "lamp"/bulb
- Check for an open circuit in CKT 264
- If, previous 2 are ok, then replace PASS-Key II Decoder Module

If yes, then:
Go to chart #1

Chart #1:
mmmmmmmmmmm.....disconnect what? where?.........

Is vehicle equipped with Universal Theft Deterrent (UA6)?....................uh oh, another module connector to disconnect. Yikes!

if "Yes", then, Pass-key II decoder module is not programmed or there is a system malfunction while the engine is running. Refer to Chart #4...................ooooooooh, looks even worse than Chart #1. You don't want to go there.............as a tease, BTW, what is a J 35628-A Interrogator (not kidding, here). Hope for a "No" answer above!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, didn't mean to slight you BD. I just figured you were answering to james' post and that you were not trying to "fix" yours. Hopefully, you guys can get this fixed, or at least understand where the problem lies and make an informed decision to proceed or head to the dealer (yuk!)

Anyway, I was just looking up where the Pass-key II decoder module was..............ooh, yikes, ok............here goes (you guys are not going to like this!).

The PKII decoder module is behind the dashboard on the passenger side of the car. The diagram shows it up under the steel dashboard structure, behind the glovebox Diagram shows with dash removed. I will look some more at the schematics to see if there is a fuse or a connector that you guys can get to easier, so you can "perform" Chart #1..

OK, guys before we go on, let'* recap a little, because there are only a couple of ways we (you) can go before getting into specialized dealer tools and whatnot. Read through ALL of the following info to decide if you want to "disconnect" the PKII Decoder Module Connector and do the chart #1 test.

Back to Chart #1:
- Ignition switch "off"
- Disconnect the "Pass-Key II Decoder Module Connector"
- Ignition switch "on"

Does security indicator turn off?
No or Yes?

if "Yes", then, Pass-key II decoder module is not programmed or there is a system malfunction while the engine is running. Refer to Chart #4. Chart #4 involves using a J 35628-A Interrogator (not kidding, here) to read valid key codes and 2 or 3 other JXXXXXX adapters and connectors to start jumping/reading codes, resistances, and Ohms between connectors and modules. (at this point I would go to a repair facility or the dealer, but that is just me) or you can basically replace the PKII decoder module and hope for the best, because it could still be a short.

if "No", then:
Is vehicle equipped with Universal Theft Deterrent (UA6)

if No to UA6, repair short to ground in CKT 264

if Yes to UA6, then disconnect "Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module Connector.
Does "Security" indicator turn off?

Yes, then replace RFA Module (I can look this up, too, if needed)

No, repair short to ground in CKT 264.

That is basically it unless you have the J 35628-A Interrogator, etc. etc.

WARNING: If you are going to disconnect the PKII module connector as described in Chart #1, then, I need to post a warning. FSM says disable SIR (airbag) system to avoid accidental deployment. The PKII module is either "under" or "Near" the passenger side airag. If you are going to start disconnecting PKII and RFA stuff, please disconnect the SIR. I don't want to be responsible for any bonne damage/personal injuries.

Onward. According to the FSM, the PKII decoder module should be accessible through the glove box

Procedure is:

Remove glove box
Remove bracket fastener (bolt/screw) from rear edge of module
Remove PKII module from bracket
Remove elctrical connection (PKII decoder module connector)

You may be able to remove the connector without removing the module, I don't know.

The module appears as a flat, shallow, rectangular box, with four round tabs at each corner for bots/fasteners that attaches to a bracket that is attached to the dash panel support. I don't have access to a scanner. If you guys really need a diagram showing the module and it'* placement, maybe you can PM randman and ask if he can scan figure 4, page 9D-7 in Book 1 of 2. Only other option is to wait until I get to WCBF next week and maybe Bill can scan. (BD, unless you want to meet me at the intersection of I-5 and cali 152 at about 3:00 p.m. next Wednesday haha!)
