I got bored today. So bored in fact I went to go buy some tools, broke out the busted cased transmission, and uh, had my way with it. It WAS nothing more than a core once I found the busted bosses (see http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...043&highlight=), and since I have a good case from ebay, I thought I could maybe move all the internals from one to the other.

So, on with the teardown. I took off the structural side pan and there is no way to swap that onto a trans that has a stamped steel pan because of the channel plate as they are different between the models. Irrelevant to me since I am using the *.*.p (what I will call it from here on out) channel plate. Also, when I yanked the side pan off, I noticed plastic crap all over the place. Yuck!



Looks like a thrust washer got, well, washed. Not too bad I guess...could be worse! Next off is the oil pump, valve body, and channel plate. Lo and behold...fourth gear clutches look like they're toast.



But, surprisingly, 3rd and 2nd clutches look nearly new. I'll take pictures later of the valving stuff. I have yet to take out the diff, output shaft, and the revers and first clutch sets. Going to take them to work tomorrow and finish the crap case off (though I wish it wasn't crap...looks to be a very strong case)

EDIT: Snapped the pics of the valve body and channel plate. Looks pretty good after a cleaning through the dish, er I mean, parts washer

I got the rest of the trans disassembled early this morning. Looks like the rest of the hardparts are in real good shape, though I still have to take a look at the first gear clutches. Soon I am going to start putting a few things in the new case...not a lot though since I have to move the dang thing to the new home. If anyone is interested in a picture of a specific part, now is the time to request it.

Reverse reaction drum is good surprisingly. Chain may be a bit on the stretched side, so I am going to budget that into the rebuild. Only clutches that looked remotely bad were the 4th gear ones, and even those didn't look too terribly bad (though they are the worst out of all that I have pulled). And Don, I ain't gonna start rebuilding until I get settled into the new place. I chose to tear it down here for 2 reasons. 1) It makes it so much easier to move and 2) The house has a brand new dishwasher. So if I need to wash any parts, now is the time to do it

Tell me about it. It'* actually pretty straightforward on the teardown. Only two things gave me trouble. One was I rounded the head off one of the valve body bolts, so I am going to have to either source a replacement or put that bolt in one of the more easilly accessable areas, and the other was taking the circlip out of the differential so I could remove it.

Now then, from what I have been reading about the Transgo Jr. kit, it is NOT a performance kit, just a correction kit. That being said, wouldn't a master rebuild kit already include the corrections?

One mod I am contemplating is installing a drain plug in the lower pan. Though I know some of you think that may be the lazy way out when changing fluid, I think it is the smarter way. Add a magnetized plug to that and i don't even have to drop the pan to check for shavings. Another mod I am considering is going to external filtration. I am thinking if I used a new engine oil p/up tube (modified of course) and screen, that would take care of fluid scavenging and plastic chunk filter (like thrust washer remains). This is all just in the "I wonder if" stage, and if anyone can chime in on these ideas, please do so.
