Yes there is a way to retrieve codes yourself, but, it only works on models from 1985 - 1993!
On 1994 and later models a scanner must be used to retrieve the codes. You can try this way to see if it will work just in case my manual is wrong about the year. Find the "Assembly Line Communication Link (ALCL)" it usually found under the dash near the steering column. Now locate terminals "A" & "B", the 2 uppermost right-hand terminals, "A" is the one the right. You must use a short wire to ground out these terminals. While the terminal is grounded with the ignition "ON" and the engine stopped, the system will enter diagnostic mode. The ECM will display "Code 12" by flashing the "Service Engine Soon" light indicating the system is working. Code 12 is simply one flash, followed by a brief pause, then two flashes in quick succession. This code will flash three times. If no codes are stored code 12 will continue to flash until the ground is removed from the terminal.
After flashing three times, the ECM will display any stored trouble codes. Each code will be flashed three times then code 12 will be flashed again indicating display is completed.
Note: If the trouble is intermittent the engine light will come for about ten seconds then go out. If the trouble is more serious then the engine light will stay on and the trouble codes stored in the ECM memory until voltage is interrupted to the ECM. To clear the codes, disconnect the battery for about ten minutes.
CODES:
code 12: Diagnostic
code 13: Oxygen sensor circuit
code 14: Coolant sensor circuit (high temp)
code 15: Coolant sensor circuit (low temp)
code 16: System voltage high
code 21: Throttle position sensor (TPS)
code 22: Throttle position sensor
code 23: Manifold air temperature (MAT)
code 24: Vehicle speed sensor
code 25: Manifold air temp
code 26: Quad driver circuit
code 27: Gear switch diagnosis
code 28: Same as code 27
code 29: Same as code 27
code 31: Park/Neutral switch
code 32: EGR system
code 33: MAF sensor
code 34: MAF sensor
code 38: Brake input circuit
code 39: Torque converter clutch
code 41: Cam sensor
code 42: Electronic spark control
code 43: Electronic spark control
code 44: Lean exhaust
code 45: Rich exhaust
code 46: Power steering pressure switch
code 48: Misfire diagnosis
code 51: Prom or MEM-CAL
code 52: CAL-PAK
code 55: ECM

That'* all up in Techinfo, too....and there'* more codes. If you come up with a code you don't see, let us know, and we can look it up.
