My 98 sse has what I think to be poor cooling on the a/c. I just recharged it today with a slight improvement in cooling. Does anyone know what the high and low side pressure readings should be? Mine are 235psi high and 40psi low. I put in 2.4lbs. of 134 according to computer software we have at the shop(a 3 man body shop).

Did you vacuum out the system before adding? Or did you just top it off?

You need to have the car at 2000 rpms, MAX A/C, with a big fan in front of the condensor. Then the pressure should be around 2.5 x the ambient temperature in degrees F.

we just went through the same thing with moms 91 and her system was clogged with gunk and stuff. When this happened to mine., i just had it drained, a vaccuum pulled ,and recharged and have no problems since!!!

Is it not blowing cold enough air, or does it not seem to blow enough cold air. See on these cars, the evaporator can get all clogged up with crap, and it will still have cold A/C but it will not come out of the vents with force.. If this is the case, it is a pretty easy fix. Your pressure readings seem ok to me.

Thanks for the replies. Ok here goes. I did a recover of the 134 with our machine but did not draw a vacuum. Our machine pulled out 1.47lbs of freon. Then I did a recharge to 2.4 lbs.
It blows not cold enough and not enough volume in my opinion. I had the fan controller out of the top of the heater box and the evaparator looked really clean. I even looked into the hole with a mirror and light. So if there'* restriction there I can't see it. I did clean the air inlet screens right below the wipers and that helped alot for air flow. I know there'* restriction somewhere cuz the air flow really bites.
I assume the high side is 2.5 times ambient. 70x2.5=175. Mine is 235 at idle. will it go down with higher revs.

Yes, the high side. So it was only 70 degrees outside? You have to have a fan in front of the condenser or else the pressure will creep up too high. Check the owner'* manual or the top of the accumulator for the correct amount of R-134a. If you got the right amount, I would try drawing a vacuum and see if it holds it for 1/2 hour.

Check out your compressor for oil leaks at front shaft seal and case seam. My 96 is leaking oil and 134a at the center seam waiting on rebuild kit to arrive.
