SSEi, reliable or not?
Well my dad sold his 1994 ssei couple of days ago and got a 2000 Toyota Camry LE. Sure the new Camry doesn't have near as many gadgets as the ssei, but honestly im starting to get sick of my bonneville myself. He had a problem with his oil pressure running very low and decided it was time to sell the car, it only had 130,000KM'* on it. Barley 70,000miles. As he was driving it away to the dealer he could smell something like burning oil coming into the cabin and the was a bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust during start up on a +20 celcius day. I think maybe a head craked and was leaking oil onto the manifold in the back and into the combustion chamber. Anyway, im just trying to see what everyone thinks about the reliability of these cars. My dad bought his with 47,000km, and about about 70,000km the supercharger needed to be rebuilt, at 82,000km one of the CCR struts malfunctioned, at 95,000km there was a problem with the A/C. He had problems with the auto leveling not shutting offf, the Driver information center flickering. Not only his car by my 1994 ssei needed a supercharger rebuilt at about 90,000km, my driver information center is flickering, my oil pressuer is going too high, all the way past the max, im on my 3rd alternator. I think im about ready to sell my SSEi really soon and even get something with less gadgets if it means haveing a reliable car. And with Gas prices in Canada going to probably $1.50 a litre my bonneville isn't as applealing anymore. Well let me know what you guys think. Bye

Most of the time when a repair shop or dealer says, " the supercharger needs to be rebuilt ", they are incorrect. It was 99% sure just the coupler which is a $30 part and a easy do it yourself fix.

I know that it'* just a coupler that usually needs to be replaced, My father and i replaced them both ourselves, and they were shot. The point is that at 80,000km should a car that once cost around 40,000$ be breaking down soo much. Just the other weekand i was driving and and my service engine soon light came on and 10min later shut off. I've replaced 2 balljoints as well and they just keep breaking to, and it'* not like i drive and hit every hole, im very careful. Peroanlly, im starting to feel like these cars are really big paper wieghts. What good are all these gadgets and everything is most of the time they don't work. Just before my dad sold his car the CCR strut malfunctioned again, this time it was a rear one. Not only can you not buy these struts anymore, but when they were available they cost 1500$ a peice canadian. I want to be able to take a drive somewhere far and not have to worry about my car not making it back at only 157,000km'* on the odometer.

I dunno. I beat the living **** out of my car and its fine. I stand by the idea that an old car should have high miles. A old car with low miles means it sat a lot. That could mean clogged fuel injectors, bad fuel filter, carbon build up in engine, and much more. My car is a 97' and has 115K on it. That is 115K abused miles by the coorperate headquarters in New Jersey that owned it before me. I'd say go for an 97'-99' SSEi with between 70 and 100K on it.

<--- Not an SSEi lover for the exact reasons stated. Too many gadgets = too many more opportunities for things to go wrong. Just my humble opinion.
I, for one, can say that I've been very happy with the two Bonnies I owned in the past, and the one I own now. None have been fancy-shmancy...just plain ol' SEs or LE (the 87).
All of the things you've stated that are wrong with your car aren't even available on the SEs.
Good luck with which ever decision you make. The choice is ultimiately yours.

Both car'* haven't sat around a lot. My car is driven a lot on the highway as well so as far as clogged injectors or valves, it'* not an issue. The same goes for my dads car. Since we've gotten them we've always put mobile 1 synthetic, spark plugs changed every 15,000km, i've added injector cleaner to the fuel every once and a while as well as bouth the bottle from gm that you hook up to a vaccume line to clean the intake. As far as these to cars not being taken car of as a reason for theri problems, it'* not it. I love my car and still do, i've spent hours out of my day cleaning and taking car of it. Look at my cardomain site and you will see just how much time i've spent in making the engine bay alone look like you could eat off it. It'* just there is so many reasons for things to go wrong in these cars and most of us have experianced those problems. Problems that include rattling superchargers, driver information center'* flickering, transmission problems, CCR strut problems, supercharger coupler problems, and this list can go on. Now im not bashing the bonneville, but after what happened with my dads car i don't feel like i can take my car on a far drive and not worry about making it back. And this can be said about every car; however, all the problems i've had with my ssei and my dads ssei, i feel like all these gadgets were never tested for reliability.

I also have to question the reliability of these cars. My grandfather'* SE has been a real money pit. PS pump locked up nearly causing him to crash because the PS system gave out in the middle of a turn, chewed up the belt and the tensioner pulley, all that had to be replaced. The entire AC system needs to be replaced, its using a quart of oil every 1000 miles, steering wheel audio buttons don't work, the front seats feel loose and shift a little when you move back and forth, the ignition switch had to be replaced because the wires for the enti-theft system inside the switch broke loose or something, theh coolant elbow needed to be replaced, its loosing coolant somewhere, and that is all I can think of right now. This car only has 110,000 miles on it. Toyota is a very good buy, I'm very happy with mine, and I know countless people who went over 200,000 miles in their camry, corolla, tacoma without a single problem.

all cars break and all cars have there share of problems. Sure you've got more gadgets with an SSEi but my first statement rings true.

Maybe mine is just special, I've never replaced even the alternator on mine. Oh, I have replaced the heater blower motor.
