Default Fuel Pump and Sender?

Hi, I have a 96 SE, which stalls when the fuel gets low. It used to do it only when I got close to empty, but over time the threshhold where it cuts out has crept up & up, and now it stalls out when it'* just below half a tank...I've replaced the fuel filter, and I don't think the problem is electrical. The stall often happens when I come to a stop, or go around a long curve. It always starts right up again.

I'm not particularly mechanical and I don't have the proper tools, so I'm left with going to a shop. I just want to get some insight before I do that.

I understand the fuel pump is in the gas tank. Say I'm going to replace this, should I also replace the fuel sender, and is that part of the fuel pump assembly? Anything else that one would want to replace at the same time once the tank is down anyways?

Thanks, any input appreciated before I go to the shop...

Default Re: Fuel Pump problems

I have a 97 SE which is having the same problems. Long starts, stalling when it gets bellow a half a tank, dieing out when you slam on the brakes or make a tight turn. I've replaced the fuel pump in it three times already and it STILL does the same thing. My sending unit doesn't work either, but that has nothing to do with the pump or drivabillity, it just tells you how much gas is in the car. (ALSO the sending unit is seperate from the pump). A new fuel pump will cost you. Someone suggested to me in here that I had a bad fuel pressure regulator. I also found out that the EGR valve will cause these problems too. Mine is out also :( LOL. I guess if you have as many miles as mine does, your going to have problems like that. But don't feel bad your not the only one going throught this. It'* VERY frustrating.

The sender should not need to be replaced, unless it is extremely rusted and will fail soon afterwards.

The pump and pickup screen aka sock should be the normal replacement items in this case.

just to let you know, I had the fuel pump replaced, it wasn't that expensive, and it completely fixed the problem - not only that, I swear the car is peppier.

Anyways, money well spent. Thanks for all help.
