My brakes are barely 6 months old. I got an alignment yesterday (after the wheel problem... yeah the right rear had 6 degrees of camber ) and drove it for the first time since this morning. The front brakes were making that really shrill noise like when the metal piece is scraping the rotor cause your pads are too low (I know really well what that sounds like...), and it did that for the first ten minutes of the drive. Then it was fine. Drove it later that day and no noise right off the bat. What could have happened this morning? At first I thought they messed something up, now just confused.

Well, best way to tell is to remove a wheel and check the clearance on the tang. If its not close, then thats not it.

Being that they were fine before the alignment, there is a good chance one of the backing plates on the front rotors was hit and is now rubbing the rotor. This is common enough to have happen when working in that area and is sometimes not noticed immediately.

If you remove the tire and look behind the rotor you will see a piece of sheet metal, this shield should be parallel and not touching the rotor.

Or you wore through those brakes in record time and may have a sticking caliper or bad brake hose causing the caliper to stick.

Or take it back to the alignment shop and have them fix it.

It hasn't happened again ever since.... oh well thanks for your suggestions, as always I'm pretty sure that I just find dumb stuff to worry about.

It'* possible that some rock or goop got on the brakes and made the noise. Then in the course of driving..it either burned off or fell out.
