Fuel pump not working
Hey guys, new here. Looked informative and helpful. Honestly I love figuring things out and being proud but I'm at my wits end and stumped. I have a 97 bonneville SE(3.8 non sc). One day while driving, the engine cut out on the expressway. Came back for about 10 seconds then went down for good. I figured I was out of gas because it had been a while since I had filled up(guage doesn't work). Put 10 dollars worth in, but nothing. No fuel pressure at rail, couldn't hear pump. Towed it to garage. Alas, it would start...but smelled horrible and only ran about 5 seconds at a time(don't know if pump was coming on or if the tow ride jarred fuel up to the rail). Finally quit starting. Fast forward a few months...finally have time and money to work on it. Dropped the tank, took the pump out, replaced, put back in. For kicks...hooked old pump to junk battery and it ran....discouraging but maybe it was just weak. So, put a new battery in the bonneville...turned key...nothing, still no fuel! Switched relays around(have the 4 prong relays), still nothing. Just in case, bought a new fuel pump relay....still not working. Also replaced the fuel pump fuse to no avail. No sound, no pressure. I can hear a click when i turn the key, then another a couple seconds later...so i'm guessing the relay is doing its job. The pump simply won't turn on. In retrospect, it would have been a good idea to probe the wires while i had the tank out, but now that its full of gas I would hate to take the tank out again. Everything else seems to work as it should. When engine sputtered/died, had no check engine light. Someone told me it may be oil pressure sending unit, but when I crank it long enough the oil pressure builds to over 40, so I ruled that out. Even though i'm out this money, i'd love for it to be something simple and get it back on the road. Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions? I read about a test wire to jump to the battery that was green and near the battery, but I didn't see one...perhaps it was a different model. Tried jiggling the wires near the tank and a few grounds, but still no sound no fuel at rail. I'm stuck and desparate.
One thing of interest but may be normal..when I removed tank, there were two connectors near each other(from the same bundle of wires). One went to the pump, the other was unplugged(the unplugged one appeared to be a 4 tube type plugin)...perhaps normal?
Thanks in advance for any advice you take time to provide.
