Car temp was 150* all the way home. my drive is about 50 mins
any ideas on whats the prob.

Most likely a thermostat stuck in the open position or a bad ECT sensor.

Smell coolant in the cabin, or is the carpet wet in the passenger well? Bad heater core won't allow the radiator to pressurize.

If the answers to the above are "no," concur with the stuck thermostat. Simple to test with a pan on the stove and a candy thermometer. (don't tell the little general I used the candy thermometer)

What is the ECT?
There is no smell of coolant, and the floorboard isn't
wet. Car temp was normal on the way to work.
Guess the ride home will let me know if I should further investigate.
is a stuck t-stat a prob? what will it do to the car?

ECT is engine coolant Temp sensor. You can find it (them in some cases, as the Series 1 has two, but series 2 has one) in the lower intake manifold near the throttle body end.

Brass sensor screwed directly into the LIM water jacket with a black two-wire connector on it.

If it'* intermittent, I'd say your stat stuck once, and it MIGHT do it again.
