What type of Fluid for PS?
I noticed today that someone had put trans fluid in it. Do these pontiacs take Dexron ATF fluid instead of that yellow PSF?
If its supposed to have the PSF in it, how do I go about changing it (pls be specific as possible, I dont like surprises).

As for changing it out, best advice is to remove the Return Hose off the back of the P/* Pump & place it in a very larg pail. Now, have someone inside the vehicle, turning the steering wheel from "lock-to-lock", with the engine running too, while you pour new PSF into the P/* Rez. When the fluid runs clean, shut off the vehice & re-connecct the P/* Return hose again. Note: you may need anywhere upto 4 - 8 L to do this, as you may have do it for awhile until it comes clean. This proceeedure is best because it will not allow air to get into the system.

Alot of older cars 70'* and back ran ATF in the PS system. My 66 Thunderbird is this way. The only problem is that when you flush it, it smells like hell. God I hate ATF smell

So deathrat, I should just have someone start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right while I pour fluid in? Oh ya with the low pressure line disconnceted at the back of the P/* rez.

I was wondering where is the power steering pump exactly, and where do we add fluid. My pump is acting up and I am hoping the it just needs fluid to be added. I have a 98 with only 60k miles on it.

on my 96, the power steering fluid reservoir is located toward the fire wall, passenger side, about 6-10 inches "down" - very near the belts - black cap.
get a long funnel to fill, or better yet, siphon off the old yunk and start filling with new stuff. careful when filling as the reservoir doesn't hold that much so add a little at a time and recheck level.
fresh power steering fluid (not atf) should be amber/clear in color.
