Default Engine swap questions.

My sister has a 93 SE that wont pass emissions. She has offered the car to me for $300. Other than the fact that it won't pass emissions the car is in pretty decent shape. It has bucket seats (don't remember if theyre leather or not), and the interior is in great shape. Anyway I was thinking of buying it and fixing the emissions problem and driving it til summer. In the summer time I'd like to basically take the SE and make it as close to an SSEI as possible (as a learning experience, and for fun).

My question is what all is involved in switching from an l27 to an l67? I know I need the transmission as well. Will I need anything else? I was thinking about possibly going with a series 2 l67 if I can get one for a good price. What is involved in converting to a S2? I'm just toying with this idea right now, but I think it might be fun so I wanted to get some details.

you will need the Engine and the Transmission along with the wireharness and the PCM

you need to be comfortable with wiring either way you choose and you NEED BOTH FSM'* from the vehicle that is getting swapped, and the vehicle that the drivetrain is from...

yes...both will have a degree of wiring to complete the project

and you will need the COMPLETE drivetrain

That means axels and such as well? Not certain what all makes up the drivetrain other than engine/tranny.

o.k. I want to change this up a little bit. The local junkyard has a series 2 engine and tranny for $250 total. First of all I am wondering what I should check when buying a JY engine. Secondly I'd like to know whats invovled in swapping a S2 engine into the current 93 ssei that has a S1 in it? The S2 seems to have much more aftermarket parts available and the engine swap was easy enough plus it has more power to begin with.

After that I suppose the same things are invovled in swapping from an l27 to a series 1 l67 as swapping from an l27 to a s2 l67?

A couple of things about the JY motor. $250 seems pretty cheap for a motor & tranny. Is this for a NA(non-supercharged) motor or a SC motor? Most important, get the VIN from the car it came out of, the JY should have this on file if it'* already out of the vehicle. Run the VIN through CarFax to verify the mileage. Is the jy offering a warranty on the motor? Make sure you can get your money back or a swap if the motor ***** the bed shortly after installing it.
Okay, now if your swapping from a NA to a SC motor will have to swap out the entire drivetrain. That means everything that'* connected from the motor to the drive wheels. Plus replacing the wiring harness.
However, if your swapping from a series 1 NA motor to a series 2 NA motor you only need to change the motor and do some wiring.
I've done 2 JY motors in my car this past year (thanks to the help of BillBoost) and I can tell you the most important thing is to verify what you're getting through an independent source. (CarFax). And secondly, try to get a motor that came out of a Bonneville. This will greatly reduce your swap time by reducing the amount of bracket swapping you will have to do. (also a lesson learned the hard way)

The only aftermarket part the S2 has that the S1 doesn't is an intercooler. All other parts are available.

You need the entire engine wiring harness and PCM from the donor VEHICLE as well. And FSM'* for BOTH cars.

Well stock the S2 has more HP than the S1 anyway... also I plan to put the S1 to good use in another car. Anyway it is for a */C motor... they charge $131 plus core for any motor at this particular junkyard but you have to pull it yourself... also trannys are like $75 for FWD and a little cheaper for RWD.

Anyway I meant other than mileage, what should I check at JY? I plan to pull the oil pan to check for metal. What other things can I do to ensure the engine will run well? Also the JY has a 30 day warranty... not very long, but should be plenty long enough to verify if it works right or not. Also is the tranny the same for the S1 and S2? or is it different?
