Burning smell.... still here after many months
this has happened a couple times now... low/no speed turning of the wheel produces a foul burning smell through the vents. i'm immediately suspecting power steering pump failure, as it also "groans" when low speed turning to left and the wheel gives me jumpy feedback. is this a correct diagnosis?

This is kinda embarassing Even with my Chilton'* I couldn't locate the power steering pump/reservoir. The burning smell is very very strong in the cabin with low speed turning, and I'd like to get this investigated ASAP. Anybody have pics? Also, I noticed my coolant reservoir was just a touch below the cold line, even when I was up to temp. I seem to have lost a very small amount of coolant over the last few months, and I can't help but wonder if this could have something to do with the burning smell. Temps are normal though. And like I said, the burning smell only comes with low speed turning. Alright, I'm done babbling.

The power steering pump/reseivoir is on the passenger side of the engine comparatment, near the fire wall, right on top! Can't miss it. The dipstick on the resivoir is labeled too.
As for your coolant...have you changed the oil since you detected a loss of coolant? If not, change it ASAP and inspect the oil for a coolant smell and coolant content. If you detect coolant in the oil, this could be a sign that your upper intake and/or lower intake gaskets are failing. More info on changing those parts out are in Tech Info.

I guess my real question is about the burning smell. Based on what I've described is this indicative of power steering failure and/or low fluid level, or could this be associated with a gasket failure in the coolant system?

Alright guys, i must be an idiot, because i absolutely cannot see where the power steering reservoir is on my car. Anybody have a pic of where this is located on a Series II? Also, my last question is still on the table if anyone can answer it. Thanks.

on my LN3, its the top accessory, and it has a cap on it, when you remove the cap, there is a dipstick tube attatched to it. I don't have a pic.. but it'* fairly obvious, the "catalyst" i think its called [the sticker located on the top radiator support], has a pic of the belt routing, and in there, there should be a small label like PS or power steering or something along those lines.
