I have deemed my 89 SSE unsafe to drive due to some severe rust in the structure underneath between the rear wheels. Too bad cause i love that car.

So my wife suprised me with a 95 bonneville. Said it is supercharged and it "goes like hell when you step on it" I have not seen it yet but the picture she sent me of the engine, it has a plastic cover on it that says 3800 series II.
The VIN 1G2HX52K1S4209404 acording to compnine says it is an L36.

If someone went to the effort to swap in a series 2 supercharged engine, what areas should i look for a sloppy transplant? Unfortunately its already paid for because i dont typically have any interest in others butcherwork.

Acording to her it does run and drive great.

My main areas of concern would be wiring. Look around the engine bay to make sure all the engine mounts are there and tight, if they are then you should be good to go mechanically.

Wiring would be the bigger concern as everything changed from Series I to Series II, including the whole thing would probably have to be converted over to OBD2 from OBD1.5. All in all mechanically it would have been a fairly easy swap, but for everything to work correctly without any codes the wiring would be the hard part.

Yes, your correct, the VIN does specify a L36. 8th digit is the engine code. K=L36 1=L67

I don't really know how sloppy one could get doing a transplant. HOPEFULLY, they also transferred the transmission over and PCM. Though, its possible for the 4T60-E non-HD to survive with a L67.

If you can, run a Carfax too.

Ryan, you brought up a very interesting point. The Series 2 did not come out until 1996. I BELIEVE, 1995 production cars did NOT have a Series 2 L67. They just had the L36.

This could mean 1 of 2 things. They are using a 1996(or newer engine) using a true OBD2 PCM. Which would be 1996 or newer.

OR, they had the existing 1995 PCM retuned for the L67 engine.

Yes, the entire wire harness changed in 1996. 1996 and newer, the PCM is no longer stored under the dash, but in the engine bay.

Mark, once you get your hands on your new baby, I'd like to have you get as many engine bay pics as you can. Also, take a picture of the transmission ID tag. It'* underneath the car, backside of the trans. And the PCM please.

The pic is lousy but its all i have. I cant see the pulley on the left, but the plastic cover goes over far enough that it might cover it. First look at this pic and i think its just a standard engine. But she has an 11 camry that has quite a bit of spunk. So when she tells me that this machine is impressively fast im left wondering.

No supercharger there, that is the stock Series II L36 vin K engine for 1995.

1995 wad a tricky year for the Bonnevilles as the N/A engine was the Series II L36 but the supercharged engine was the Series I L67. A bit of a mix bag lol.

Oh brother. Well too much money was forked over for it then. I will go discuss everything with the seller in the morning. Hopefully she is a reasonable person that will realise that she got $400 over bluebook value. Money is tight around here and small claims is not out of the question. The car was represented multiple times as having a supercharged engine. Wife doesnt even know what a supercharger is.

Its the thought that counts. Im driving a potential death trap and she ponied up the cash for somthing better. A newer version of the bonneville i already have is probably a good ride. Its still sad tho. The 89 body has really grown on me.

Well today couldnt have gone any better. I went with low expectations to try to re-negotiate the price on the bonneville. Checked out the car and explained to her just what it was and my opinion of what it is worth. She was completely cluless and apologetic. She let her boyfriend handle the listing and stuff because she was afraid of getting taken advantage of. But since it was a gift frim her grandma, she couldnt take any less then what my wife gave her. So she actually gave us our money back and apologised! So after what started as the most awkward conversation ever, i was on my way to check out a car from craigslist a few towns over.

99 regal gxe 172k miles loaded with all kinds of bells and whistles. Minor cosmetic stuff. Paint peeling over the windshield and on the trunk deck. Truly rust free save for where the paint peeled. In outstanding shape. Pricetag $1000.00 The owner believes the motor is blown. It has a light rod knock. I explained that it can probably be nursed for quite a few more miles. He diddnt care. "first thousand bucks gets this heap out of my driveway"

I will be picking it up on sunday morning. Also found an add for the engine/trans/accessories/harness/pcm out of a wrecked 98 regal GXE. It is still in the mangled car and will start and go into gear and 98k miles on the odomoter. $800 for the parts or $1500 installed.

So for 1800 plus another few hundred for bits/pieces for the engine change, i should end up with a pretty solid car.

Now im waiting for my house to burn down or sumpthin because this is more luck in one day then ive had inthe last 10 years.
