Okay. I got in my car this morning and drove about 3/4 of a mile and all of the sudden I''m hearing and feeling this weird combination of rubbing/ squeeking/ pulsating sound coming from somewhere in the rear of my car - thought it might have been a tire at first - but definitely from a wheel since it speeds up as I accelerate and slows down when I let up on the gas. It stops when I press on the brakes I'm sure about that.

This is the first time this has happened (my rear brakes are just over 2 years old). I checked out everything real fast to see if anything other than the rear brake drum and components seemed out of the ordinary and saw nothing. Any suggestions as to what this might be before I take it to my mechanic?

Tok the car to the corner and back of my condo develpment just a few minutes ago and felt a bad pulsating coming from the rear wheels (definitely the rear wheels, just not sure what one, but I think it'* the rear drivers side) and it just got worse and worse driving no more than two blocks!

As I was approaching my parking spot I felt the rear wheel lock up as the car skidded into my spot. If I wasn't lucky enough to be where I was a t this time at night I would have had to have called for a tow at 1:00 am just to get it back in my parking spot or to a nearby garage as there'* no way I or anyone could have puched to car due to the rear brakes locking the way they did.

So I guess it is the rear brakes huh?

Sorry to say it, but it sounds like she threw a brake shoe, alright. I'm not sure if I should suggest pulling the drum or not, because if you've never worked on brake drums before, you don't want to be in there if something goes wrong.

I used to do nothing but drum brakes, and I hate working on 'em. Real PIA compared to disks...

I was just curious as to what the problem/solution turned out to be. I thought that it might have something to do with a leaky rear wheel cylinder. Since MOS95B has eaten his share of brake dust for lunch I'll defer to his expertise. In the final analysis it seems you'll need a new pair of shoes at the very least!

Definitely take the drums off. I'm sure you need at least shoes. Even if you don't know how to change them (I agree they're a PITA) you should at least check out what the problem is. Last time I did mine I needed to replace the cylinders too. It was pretty dusty and rusty in there.

Surprised that it'* the rear passenger wheel/brake that seems to have been the culprit based on where the one skidmark was that I noticed early yesterfay morning. Funny but I could have sworn that clunking was from the rear drivers side!

Going to have to have it towed to my mechanic about 8 miles away. Then I'll let you guys know what it was. It is a bitch though because it happened without any warning signs... Good thing it happened on my street rather on a fast moving highway where people could have gotten seriously hurt or killed.

THE PROBLEM: Broken spring in rear drum. Since drums were off, put new brake shoes in with new replacement hardware.

Oh man, I had a ball doing those rear brakes....I actually think I may have created some new curse words nobody even heard before. The things that were coming out of my mouth are best described as demonic. Next time I feel the need to do another set of rear brakes, I'm inviting my priest over to perform an excorism in the process. NEVER AGAIN.
