I've been considering switching the bonne over to this and I was wondering if anyone had sugggestions or reccomendations (brand, type of oil). The car has 68k on it and I also wanted to make sure that a switch wouldnt mess up anything.

Definitely one of the best forms of protection you can do for any engine.
Go with a 100% sythetic oil.
Mobil 1
Penzoil
Amsoil
Quaker State
The wider the range the better. ie. 5 W 50 is better than 10 W 40 is better than 10 W 30
0 W 30 for sub zero temps. 10 W 30 is good all weather spec. 5 W 30 for the colder climates.
Some older engines (20 years or more) may leak a little more externally because their seals do not have as tight a tolerance as the newer engines.
The big downside is that they cost a lot more but they do last a lot longer than conventional oils.
Use a top quality filter. Sometime you can change the filter twice and oil on the second filter change but I don't recommend it. It depends on the type of driving you do. Short trips and a heavy foot will contaminate the oil with acids and carbon and will require more frequent changes. Long constant highway driving can extend oil life significantly.

I've been told to never switch back to conventional oil after going with synthetic...why would I switch back though?? :?

Anyway, just don't let her sit too long with that oil.

I've been running Syntec in mine since I got it in 1996 w/45k. I'm at 130k, and no news is good news. Improvements have been made to help with the rubber seals, but it still can cause some leakage. You may notice yours start to smoke some, too, when you start the car or during an extended uphill idle. Synthetics can contribute to that condition in a few cases due to valve seal leakage. Mine has since I changed over, but the SC is hard on them anyway,too, so some of that'* wear now. Just be aware of it - synth can cause some smoking but it'* nothing to be concerned about. You'll know when it'* the real thing becuase it will smoke all the time, but these are tough motors and you should see a good long life out of it regardless. A lady at my office has an '89 LaSabre with 260k miles running strong.

Being devil'* advocate: if you run the numbers on changing your oil regularly (3k miles) with and wo/synth, you can pocket right at $1000 over the course of 150,000 miles (assumes $5/qt Synth, $1.37 non). Many would debate whether it'* worth it if they are the car- trading type, or they just count on some major bottom-end failure regardless of the oil.

Personally, I treat every car like it'* my last and I like knowing pushing an oil change is not the end of the world if I'm in a time pinch. Plus, I expect this engine to hold up for 200k at least.

Thanks for the info. My only real concern about the switch is a possible leak, but ill worry about that if it happens. I know my friend switched his saab 9-5 over to it at 55k when he first bought it and had no troubles at all. I think hes running Moble 1 0W-40, which i think is the factory oil in some Mercedes and BMWs now

Try a synthetic blend. Not as pricey as the pure synthetic.
