Engine Swap
Greetings all,
I have a wonderful 92 Bonne SSEi SC in immaculate shape, except for the drivers seat bolster. The engine has not been taken care of and I only found this out 6 months after I purchased it (133,000), the bearings were shot and other things. I purchased a used 95 SC engine with 83,000 miles and have had it installed. The engine turns over fine but throws a code 58. The scanner also says the vehicle anti-theft system is on and the car will not start. I have the factory GM manuals for the car (3 of them). My mechanic and I have poured over the books and do not find where the VAT can be reset. I think we need to change the computer to a 95, but he (mechanic) says we shouldn't have to. Any help is appreciated

Welcome aboard....
I think you'll have to get the key tumbler from the original car or wait for Demi-god to come through and find a way to bypass the VATS value..

Might want to poke through www.luminasupercharged.com
He swapped in a SC motor into a lumina and had the same problem. He went over a couple of ways to solve it.

Just curious-but why would the vats be involved(key tumbler)if just the motor was swapped? Doesn't make sense to me. was any wiring swapped over w/the newer motor-or just the long block?

It sounds to me that a wire or two may have been missed upon reconnection! Did you do any work to the column while the engine was out? Did you get a new ECM to match that new engine?
BTW: I'll post here more often & therefore will not reply to the same question at Bonneville Intensity! Sorry, I don't like repeating myself if I don't have to!

Engine Swap
:?: All of the original wiring was kept from the old car because we KNEW it was OK (tested it). Thanks for the heads up on the Lumina. The only thing the mechanic did was swap the engines out. He used the parts off the old engine that we knew were good. I'll check in later.
Thanks so much!!!

No work was done inside the car. ECM :?: I know about the BCM and have been told that it can be reprogrammed, but I'm not sure.

The ECM/PCM is what controls the drive train functions. The BCM controls all other non-drive train functions like: Turn Signals, Headlights, etc.. The EBCM controls the ABS Brakes.

:?: Do I get a new BCM or can this one be cleared and reprogrammed? I have the factory manuals (3) but we cannot find anything in them about this. Help is VERY MUCH appreciated!

Okay, lets start at the beginning again! First off which ECM (Main Computer) are you using? The 92'* or 95'*? Also which Ignition Module are you using? The 92'* or 95'*? This could be your problem, forget about that BCM it'* NOT part of this equation! My reasoning behind this is simple, The 95'* ECM & Ignition Module may require a DIFFERENT SIGNAL from the VATS system than the 92'* was programed for! There is 15 Different Resistor Codes for the VATS Keys! It may boil down to replacing the Ignition Cylinder &/or Ignition Switch from the 95'* column! :?
