Default Stalling issues-unsafe @any speed!

1992 Bonneville SE with 144K. It will idle and run but it stalls under load and at other times not under any load.Will restart after a few tries but eventually will die.I let it run in drive @ idle and it dies but will start again. This is a friends car and I drove it for the first time today. I have not replaced anything,Please help in eliminating areas so we just do not throw a bunch of new parts at it.

Several things to check. fuel pressure, Air filter, MAF screen, MAF, EGR. Start with this.

Add crankshaft position sensor to the end of that list. That'* what it was when I had that issue last year at about that same mileage. Usually, but not always, you'll get a check engine light about it (P0336?).

So you had same stalling issues and the crank position sensor resolved it? Its not my car-trying to help a friend and just starting research, Can you direct me to a how to on crank position sensor replacement(no ck engine on) and how to check fuel pressure? Thanks!

Yes. Everything else tested fine, though. Most stalling problems are related to one of the things Dan mentioned, so check those first. They're much easier to test/replace.

Testing a crank sensor requires an oscilloscope, and replacing one means pulling the harmonic balancer (or throwing $200 at your local garage). It doesn't look like fun.

It'* really not hard to change a CPS. You remove the belt(*) remove the right wheel and splash guard, remove the harmonic balancer bolt. Then use a HB puller and remove the HB. The CPS is right there, 2 bolts and it'* off. Reverse to put it back. Now, removing the HB bolt is a bit involved.

I just had this issue as well. It was my MAF Sensor that went bad.

My buddy'* 2000 Bonneville SE did the exact same thing. Would randomly stall. He unplugged the MAF and drove around with it unplugged until he could find a replacement, and that stopped the stalling. Give that a try.

Well..any suggestions on the harmonic balancer bolt? Also how does one check fuel pressure? what does a faulty MAF look like? Broken filament?

You need a fuel pressure test to check that. A broken wire on the MAF is a bad MAF, but other things can cause problems with it. Unplugging it is a good test. Removing the HB bolt involves a trick. I use a large breaker bar and jam it in to the sub frame and then crank the engine. Be sure to pull the fuel pump fuse so the engine wont start. Keep in mind, this is not the safest method.
