That fiber padding on the underside of my hood is disintegrating from dry-rot or something. I have looked to purchase a replacement online but can't find it; Kragen.com, Autozone.com, JCWhitney.com, etc.

I called the dealer, they just called it "hood insulation" and wanted - get this - $89.00 for a replacement. That didn't even include those plastic 'push-in' fasteners if I needed any - those are extra!

I'm sure GM wants me to know this is made of some special 'space age' material developed by NASA, but the novelty of that marketing pitch is beginning to wear-off, considering most of this 'space technology' has been in the marketplace for longer than I've been alive. And I sure hope NASA doesn't use whatever is falling apart on the underside of my hood.

I've seen the rolls of shiney aluminized insulation/padding for race cars, but I would prefer a non-reflective replacement that looks OEM, though hopefully exceeds in durability the OEM crap I already have.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Will I need to buy a roll of stuff and cut it myself or are there pre-cut replacements out there (cheaper than $89.00)?

it is called a hood imsulator. you dont need a new one, you can just recondition yours. willwren did his for his SSEi

I'm not sure I want to repair this one, its falling apart in three or four places. Chunks of fibery stuff are falling out of it and kind of disintegrating before my eyes.

Can you take a pic of it and post it here? Mine was disintegrating too. Recovering it like I did seals it all back up, and prevents further disintegration.

You can order it through gmpd.com, but shipping will kill you, and you'll end up paying for more than the dealer wanted in the first place. Trust me. I looked into this before I did mine.

You CAN fix it, almost irregardless of condition. Go to my website, you'll see what it looks like after. Cost me less than $20, and I went fancy.

You have a GM part# on that, Will? I went to the GMPD website and found nothing.

I went to your Bonneville page but saw nothing about the hood insulation. Do you have a link to the exact page?

Thanks for the photo. Can't discern the insulation from the dark underside of the hood, but looks nice anyhoo...I knew it had a name, just couldn't remember it. I hate when that happens...

It can be called many things, of course, but in the automotive industry, the companies who make these things for OEMs call it - of all things - a hoodliner. Imagine that! :P

Will, provided you're not protecting a trade secret, how did you recondition yours?

Just covered it with some fabric and glued it together. Paint accordingly!

I thought this insulation also served as a fire blanket? Don't laugh, but I thought I heard something about that.

Also, I see you '92-'95 folks have a underhood light. I want one!

Black craft felt from a fabric store, spray 3M adhesive on the old insulator (after carefull brushing the loose crap off), and on the back side of the new piece of felt. Let it dry a few minutes according to the 3M instructions. Then press them together, and work it into the contours. Cut the perimeter with a razor blade or scissors, cut out the holes for the retainers/light.

Mask and paint how you like. My original had the SSE logo (another SSEi quirk), and this liner is no longer available.
