Default VATS Issues

I am having a problem with my 95 similar to the one I had in my 97 Lumina. When you turn the key once in a while there is a second or two delay before the starter turns. My Lumina did this until I could only start it with a little luck. It turned out to be the VATS system on the Lumina. Would this be the same problem? Also yesterday on the way home from work I noticed the security light come on and go off after a min or so while driving. I was gonna just stop and have the VATS disabled today after work but I thought I would post first. Thanks

Sounds like VATS to me. Clean the key down well (and by that I mean the passkey part of it) and see if it still has the issue. Also, if you have another key laying around for the car, try that for a while and see if the issue persists.

Well I just got back from the stereo shop and had the VATS disabled. Works perfect now.

Personally I would never disable such a system, it'* there to stop people from so easily stealing your car...then again maybe you live in an area that you entirely do not need to worry, I've seen places like that in the US in certain spots, just mine ain't one of them.

Thats understandable, and I do live in a place where theft is not that bad. However if someone wants the car their going to get it regardless of what theft protection you have. If someone steals it I will put in a no deductible claim and buy a SC one like my 93 . Thanks.

I didn't see your comment early enough to post yesterday. Since the VATS security light comes on and goes off while driving, your theft deterrent module is getting bad readings from the wiring and the key chip contacts. Mine did that for about a year. It finally set a code that indicated the unit had lost its mind and was getting a bad reading so it wouldn't do theft deterrence anymore. Others have just cut the wires to the key cylinder contacts while the motor is running which causes the save conclusion on the part of the logic in the TDM. Only downside is my security light stays on. Black electrical tape fixed that.

You did the right thing disabling it. How much did they charge? I never thought of having a local shop disable it like they do to install alarms, etc.

It was $50 to disable it. Not exactly cheap but I don't have time to do it myself. I guess all you have to do in install a resistor with the same resistance as the chip in the key inline on the wire coming from the ignition switch to the box. I am just happy to avoid having no starts and being stranded.

Glad you got it fixed up.

Good information on the symptoms as well.. interesting how the beginning of the failure can show itself.
