Default Drive problems ...son of a @#$%^....

Ok, I was leaving work today, sitting at a onramp light when it went green. I gave it some gas (about half throttle) and it started to go. Made it about 20ft then reved up out of gear. I pulled over and turned it off and back on...tried different gears...etc... Nothing worked. If I put it in gear and hit the gas the engine reved fine and the speedo moved accordingly. It holds the speed once there and slowly trickles it away. If I put it back in park (car is still sitting motionless) you hear (and see in the speedo) the engine dropping back to idle speed rapidly (about 3 seconds from 30 - 0) and grinding something while doing it.

So I'm waiting for my aunt to get there now. Got the AC going (a little warm out) and all the sudden the car just dies... electrical and all. So I go to restart it and nothin. Just a few clicks like it has a low batt and some weird faint flashing in the dash. Turned it back to ACC mode and then power came on fine. I then tried to start it again and it did on something like the second or third try. I just ended up turning everything off and waiting for a ride. Tow truck came and took it to the shop (should be there by now being looked at) and I got a ride home. I should hopefully get a call in the next couple hours on the problem.

So my guess is the differential since I got speedo and absolutely no gears in any dirrection. What do you all think?

BTW: THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!

Well, I had enough juice to run my subs and enough so as when I tried turning it over it did it with some authority like normal. I am pretty sure that the batt and alt are both up to the task. You did however remind me of something that happend once about 5 days ago. I was drving down the road and I swore I saw my dash reset. You know, the whole gauges all the way right..then all the way left...then to their positions.

This is the perfect thing to happen after what happened to me yesterday... :?

I got 1 more car to go before I am completly out of luck. I have my sisters old 6000 LE I fixed up to sell. It is in my garage waiting for the OK from my dad (who actually owns it) to go ahead and sell it. So I gotta run outside and dig it out and hopefully use it for a couple days. I even had my mom call and get insurance put on it so I am all legal and stuff. She works for my insurance company...

I'm confused. Did you say the speedometer is moving up to 30 when your car is not actually moving?

If I rev the engine the speedo moves as if I am accelerating. It will go to 60 if I keep holding the throttle down. The whole time the car is sitting still. It'* like looking at the gauges move as if I were on an on ramp but I look out the window at the same rock the whole time.

I'm confused about where the speedo gets its info, I thought it was from the wheel speed sensors at the wheel. Where does the speed info come from?

Whoh, that'* serious. I was going to say that whatever happened is between the speed sensor (which is on the transmission) and the wheels.

Speed sensors for the antilocks are on the wheels. The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is on the transmission.

$3.3k sounds a little extreme. Can you get a used one, 14-50k miles, for about $2000?
