Guys, not to bust anyone'* chops here, but gas tanks are welded all the time. I'll be damned if I'd pay $100 (which seems cheap for a tank to me) when a few stitches with a stick welder will fix it permanently.
Did everyone notice I said to fill the tank with water and drain it first?

tank
Just had a leak on my Supra last month when you filled it past 3/4.
Took the right rear fender liner out and jacked the car so the gas all went to that side,
and there it was, a leak just above the seam.
Sanded all the rust really good down to bare metal and applied Fiberglass resin Jelly
being careful to add a little less than specified hardener to keep it more plyable.
Worked out real well.
The japanese only use a primer then black coating on their tanks.
Not half as good as the GM tank.

Another option is not to fill the tank past 3/4. But that'* the Cheap Bastard in me talking. Life'* too short. Don't make it any shorter.

I agree with BillBoost, if you're looking for a cheap fix, just go buy some epoxy.
I have heard from many "all you have to do is" purge the tank with argon after you wash it out with water, and you can weld on it. No thanks, I like my arms the way they are, with no burns, and all of my skin.

weld
I second that.
Used to hang at a local short track in town and my experienced welder friends dad was approached to be the official track welder during wrecks.
He said no way no how. He didn't want to have anything to do with gas and welding in the same vicinity. Its not worth it.
