'96 SSE "Check engine oil level" and oil press gau
I have a '96 SSE 55k on hold until Monday to possibly buy. I have one potential deal breaker.
The engine oil is full. On a dead cold start everything is fine. On a startup after the car has been warmed, the "Check engine oil level" message comes on the display for about 10 seconds and then goes off. What is the sensor measuring to send this message?
Some background...
The dealer replaced the UIM and LIM gaskets, they have less than 100 miles on them. Valve cover and oil pan gaskets replaced. After 2 hours of driving, no leaks anywhere.
I also have to ask about the oil pressure gauge because I have had one of those renegade ones in my '95 SE. Cold start it is at (approx) 80. Warm idle at 40, warm acceleration 80. So it moves around alot and quick. But that'* the way it has been since day one.
The 96 SSE is much more steady but does move. Cold start it'* about 80. When warm, it operates between about 30 and 60. The only time the pressure goes below 40 in my 95 SE, is when I am a little low on oil or on a very long run.
There is some issue, but i don't know if it is an oil pressure issue. My inclination is to make the dealer take an actual oil pressure reading while I'm there.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. This could skunk, what is otherwise a great car.

The oil LEVEL sensor is in the oil pan. Make sure they connected it, or didn't pinch wires during the work.
The oil pressure on the 96 is normal. The sensor on your 95 was probably bad.

Thanks. I needed to be sure that the message display wasn't in any way related to pressure.
A number of us had gauges that did exactly the same thing. I think we agreed it was OK to be consistent if not right. I forgot to get back to the thread. A month or so later, i had the pressure read mechanically while monitoring the gauge. 1) It measured 10 p higher just about all of the time, steady state. 2) this is more subjective but... It was "hyper" by direction. If the pressure increased or decreased, the needle would shoot immediately way ahead of the actual change. FWIW
